David's Story

Life Happily married to a beautiful woman, and we have a wonderful son. He's growing fast! In 2006 we plan on a trip to the Philippines (my wife's home country). My son will get to see his maternal grandmother for the 1st time. I am also hoping next year to get another sportbike. I miss the ol YZF! School Mr. Enke, my 4th grade teacher at Frelinghuysen Elementary in N.J. inspired me most. His teaching style was like no other. And I still remember things he taught to this day. My family moved from Marksboro NJ to Newton NJ in 1976. I attended Fredon Township Elem. and then Kittatinny HS until 1981 when my family moved to Florida. My best years growing up were definitely spent in NJ. There was lots to do, and having snow in the winter made it that much more fun. I made alot of friends and would like to reconnect with some of them. I graduated from Chamberlain HS in Tampa in 1983. I also attended Buchannan JRHS for 6 months in 1980. What exactly was that they served in the cafeterias anyways?! To be honest, I hated school down here. I had few friends and there seemed to be much more of a class/social division here. Also, the school had a gymnasium that was only used it when it rained. Why is that?? It was freaking 90+ deg...Expand for more
rees most of the time outside. Bassackwards place. Military After graduating from HS in June of 1983, I entered the US Naval service in Oct 1983. Bootcamp was at Orlando, Fl. I guess I'm lucky it wasn't Great Lakes! I have some good memories of boot camp, looking back. After boot and apprenticeship training, I was given orders for the USS Kitty Hawk, an aircraft carrier based out of San Diego. I left home the day the Super Bowl was played in Tampa for the 1st time. I still remember seeing the Goodyear blimp high above the old Tampa Stadium. The Kitty Hawk was already on deployment, so I was T.A.D at North Island for about 2 months. Shore duty ain't so bad I tell ya! After a grueling flight to Korea, I caught up with my ship. My 1st week onboard at sea, we hit a Russian sub. That was interesting to say the least! I also remember us taking a F-14 in the barricade. Thanks to some thinking by the Air Bos'n, some other aircraft got saved from any damage. Being ship's company had its ups and downs, but all in all, it was good. Got to see parts of the world I probably never would have. Once my active duty was up in '86, I went into the Reserves until 1988. I did my time in Jacksonville at NAS Jax and then NAF (now NAS) Mayport.
