David's Story

July 2008 I've enjoyed reading others' 'stories', so I thought I'd write a little about myself. Well, hmm, little. That may be an understatement. It kind of got out hand! Life - A work in progress: Well, let me just begin with I was born at a very young age, to mixed parents, male and female, and... hmm, perhaps that's too far back. A do over; I've been married for almost 21 years to a wonderful woman and we have one child, a 15 year-old daughter that alternates from making us extremely proud of her musical, theatrical and academic achievements, to driving us absolutely bonkers. Guess that's her job as a teenager. Though honestly, I don't remember being near as problematic at that age. Could just be my failing memory. We live in Farmington Hills, an area that has always felt even more like home than Redford. Odd that. I've a great many hobbies, activities and interests. Not all will I list here but they include arts/crafts, music (primarily as associated with church), and sports (I enjoy playing ice hockey & golf and doing unicycling, juggling and watching lacrosse). As for church, we are very involved and are found there frequently each week. It is our loving family, our community and supports us spiritually, emotionally and even physically, as we exercise there twice a week. I still ride with the Redford Township Unicycle Club -- sporadically, as does my daughter -- a group I helped found back in 1975 and is still going strong. The Club has won many awards -- national championships (I've even won one myself), toured Europe and generally have a great time together. Many of my friends from those early days of the Club have moved on then come back to the group and now their kids are riding and a second generation is carrying the unicycling torch, so to speak. Well, I mean we don't really have a torch, that would probably just draw angry crowds and bad publicity and... oh, sorry for that mental detour. I also started a juggling group in Redford that was not so decorated and only lasted a few years then morphed into a unicycle basketball group, but I won't even mention that. Unfortunately, I've needed to put many of these side pursuits aside in favor of a new avocation, that being cancer research and treatment. I was diagnosed with melanoma in 1999, treated and was thought to be cancer free until 2006, when it was found again and no longer just on my scalp but in several organs. We were told at that ti...Expand for more
me that Stage 4 melanoma is viewed as incurable by the medical community. Kind of put a damper on that day! But what did they know, that was almost two years ago and so far I've beat the odds of only surviving 7 months through the administration of two courses of IL2, and am now participating in a chemo trial. In the process of these treatments some of the cancer spots have shrunk and I've picked up a great deal of knowledge about the disease, not to mention a new vocabulary. Most days I can pretty much function as normal and not be wiped out but I'll tell you this, I am no great fan of chemotherapy. And I have no plans of uploading a photo of myself in the near future. Picture Uncle Fester (though thinner) with glasses, but no light bulb, and you have a reasonable idea. With all of the above stuff, I almost don't have time to work! But I actually am employed. Career: After graduating from RU I earned my bachelors in Architecture from Lawrence Tech. Since the local economy in the early 80's was not all that great (Hmm, where have I heard that recently?) I worked as an engineering draftsman, then a space planner. And during that time I went back to school, this time art school, Center for Creative Studies, majoring in graphic communications. After a couple of years in art school I finally landed a job as an architectural planner / project mgr with NBD. I've since slowly migrated from that initial architectural position into increasingly more technical positions and now am employed as an IT Project Manager -- Lead IT PM -- managing all IT aspects (voice & data networks, servers, PCs, etc.) of real estate (primarily construction) projects, still tangentially related to architecture. I'm still with the Bank -- going on 22 years now -- though it has changed names four times. It is truly a blessing that I work with the group that I do as they are very, highly, greatly, extremely (and this is not exaggerated) supportive of my medical situation. Among many other supportive measures, I am presently permitted to work from home basically all the time, which helps the situation immensely. Well now, that's probably a whale of lot more than you wanted to know about me and what I've been up to. I could go on. I mean I still have 15093 characters remaining, but that will do... for now. I will say (write) this, that if it all ends in the near future, it's been a wonderful life and I've enjoyed myself very much. See you.
