David's Story
Life:
Hello fellow Cherokees. Well, where do I begin? I'm living in El Paso now (West Texas, not Colorado). I retired from the Army after 23 years on Feb 1, 1998. It was a remarkable, memorable, and honorable career that I thoroughly enjoyed. We should all be thankful that somewhere in the far corners of the globe there are Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, and Marines standing a post. It's likely cold, dark and wet, or hot, dry, and sandy. Without regards, he and/or she are walking a grid so that you and I continue to have the freedom to read this message, or not. So tonight, before you lie down to sleep thank God for them and then say a prayer for them because they know not what tomorrow brings. No matter what your politics, we are a nation at war and our brothers, fathers, uncles, mothers, sisters, aunts, etc. are engaging a formidable foe that is bound and determined to completely destroy us and our way of life.
I've visited some beautiful and some not so beautiful places. All were interesting in their own right. I've also met some wonderful people (especially Germans), who are grateful we are there. If I had it to do over again I wouldn't hesitate. Today I'm a Supervisory Federal Agent with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and TSA. I married a smart lady who has managed to keep me out of trouble for over 40 years. She's a 1974 Fox Tech graduate (I told her I wouldn't hold that against her). We have one son, Brandon Jarrell, and two grandsons, Syncere and Sylys. God has truly blessed us as only He can. I hope to hear from some of you soon. It will be good to share how our lives have developed over the years. God bless you all. David
School:
My favorite teachers/Professors - Mrs. Carter, 6th grade, Judge Sue Kurita (Criminal Law - El Paso Community College), Mr. Black (SHHS Band). My least favorite teachers - Mrs. Phillips, 9th grade science, Mr. Moss (SHHS Band). My favorite subject - Band. My least favorite subject - anything that had to do with numbers. My favorite event - Mardi Gras, N.O., LA. 1973/74. My least favorite event - skills assessments. Favorite place - Mahogany Woods. Least favorite place - principal's office (you may or may not remember, I spent more than my share of time there :o). Favorite person - My beautiful wife - Irelanette. Least favorite person - don't have any. Best friends - Rodney Adams, Dwight Morris, Mike Bonepart.
College:
I attended Park University. As I look back at my years at SHHS, I remember I didn't pay very close attention in classes. Its funny how life's lessons change our perspective. The simple fact is, when you're paying 50-60K for an education, you tend to pay closer attention. I finished MCL. It was worth the effort. I majored in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement. How did I became interested in LE? Military service steered me in that direction as an investigator with the Office of the Inspector General. I worked along side Military Police and Criminal Investigators on many cases. I enjoy teaching also so I'll likely do that after closing the book on this chapter of my life. I'm pretty sure it will be at the college level so I'm headed back to the classroom for a M...Expand for more
asters Degree. When I think about how I was back in the day at SHHS and how some of the kids are today, believe me, college is the better choice for me. My son taught me how to be patient with the kids today but it was just one of him. To have a class of 20-25 teenagers, I don't think so. Besides, after spending many years as a Drill Sergeant in the Army, I don't think I have the temperment for teaching high school kids today. I'm back in school now working on the Masters. I was recently accepted at the Angelo State University Graduate School to pursue a Masters Degree in Homeland and Border Security. I'm taking it slow (no rush). Still have 1.5 years with Homeland Security before I retire so I'll finish them both around the same time.
Workplace:
As I mentioned I'm a Supervisory Inspector/Investigator with the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration. I supervise seven (soon to be eight), Inspectors assigned to the El Paso International Airport. Our primary focus is enforcement of Federal laws pertaining to aviation security. The threat is very real and that becomes more evident everyday.
Military:
I joined the Army shortly after graduation (Jan 1974 delayed entry; August 1974 Basic Training). My initial enlistment was for two years with the Army's Transportation Corps as a Landing Craft Operator (yes, the Army does have boats. In fact, the Army has more boats than the Navy, and more aircraft than the Air Force). The irony of it all is to this day, I still can't swim (more specifically, I can't float), so as you can imagine I don't spend very much time in the water, but I love to go to the coast. Needless to say, if I can't stand up in the water, I don't go in the water. But, we vacation on the coast every year. As you might imagine, I didn't stay in that particular career field very long. I later switched to a combat specialty which is what brought me to West Texas and Fort Bliss. During my 23 years on active duty I did two tours in Germany, one in Saudi Arabia, frequented Greece several times, and we spent our Honeymoon in Paris. I also spent a couple of years at Fort Hood, TX and a couple at Fort Lewis in Washington State before I returned to Ft. Bliss and El Paso, where I retired in 1998. It was a good experience and one that kept me on the right track. I would recommend military service for anyone who is looking for a rewarding, honorable, and exciting career.
Hobbies:
Love listening to Smooth Jazz. It helps me get through the work day when I'm in the office all day writing and reviewing reports (promotion took me out of the field and into an office and behind a desk). Still playing the drums mostly in my head right now) but planning to buy a kit soon. Got into public speaking and Toastmasters International in 2007. After a lot of hard work I finally achieved Distinguished Toastmaster a few years ago. I'm working on being a professional G-Papa. Two boys 8 & 10. Just old enough to give ole G-Papa a good workout.
My prayer is that all of my friends and classmates are living their dreams and living them to the glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Always give Him the glory!
