David Clark:

CLASS OF 1988

David's Story

My first job was at KFC on Chapman Hwy at 16. I really thought that if Harland Sanders could make it to the ranks of Colonel there, then maybe (if I worked really hard) I could get to "First Lieutenant," or something close to that. Those dreams faded quickly when, in the summer of 1987, a friend of mine from Doyle High leaked that there were openings at Kroger's for Courtesy Clerks. The KFC days were history..... After graduation I attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for 2 years and then served in the US Army. After my discharge due to a severe ankle and leg injury, I returned to Knoxville (UT) and continued my education and worked part time in sales. I met my wife at a 4th of July party in Crossville, while she was visiting from Denmark. She didn't speak much English at the time, which was a good thing, since no one couldn't tell her the big mistake she was about to make. I ended up moving to Denmark for 5 years while she finished her chemistry education. While in Copenhagen I learned the language (danish) and finished my college studies. Eventually, I ended up back in the Knoxville area (Maryville) where I work in pharmaceutical sales. I have been married 15 years and have 2 great kids (son and daughter). When I'm not working or doing things with the kids, you will find me riding one of my Trek road racing bicycles on Hwy 129 at the Dragon. Yes, I'm the idiot on a bicycle while the motorcycles race by. I try to get 2-3 rides a week at 80-100 miles each ride. Best thing (and maybe most dangerous)in t...Expand for more
he world to do to stay in shape. To answer the "getting started" questions: My biggest surprise is how much more stressful growing up is from the teenage years (kids, job, etc), and how infrequently I see friends/classmates from South Young. Honestly, since graduation I have only run into 3-4 people. Where the hell did everyone go? I can't really complain how things turned out for me, and I look forward to attending the 20 year reunion. I like to spend my free time with my wife and kids, cycle, swim, golf, etc. Wouldn't change that much of my past. Like most, I probably would have paid more attention in high school/college, and I definitely would have liked more confidence and the mentality to "go after what you want." Fortunately, that eventually grew on me. Don't even know if old classmates will remember me. I was kind of low-key in those days. I would like to think I was someone who had a good sense of humor and appreciated a good joke. Appearance-wise, still tall and thin. With the exception of the gray hair that has begun to overtake my head, and the squeaky noise my joints make in the morning. OMG, getting older sucks! On a sad note; I had a friend from Doyle High (Beau Wheatley) pass away 2 days before Christmas 2007. His dad Mike was a VP at South-Young after 88. He was a good friend with an unfortunate bad heart. His friends will miss him... Well, guess that just about sums it up. Would love to hear from anyone I went to school with (whether in the same class, or not). Bring on the high school gossip! :)
