David's Story
What a long, strange trip the last 55 years have been. Susan and I live at Kinnikinnick Farm in northern Illinois. We have been here for over 25 years. Prior to becoming an organic farmer, I managed to put on a different hat every decade. In the 60âs I was a U. of Chicago grad student before becoming a Civil Rights organizer in Mississippi and Chicago. In the 70âs I shifted into Illinois politics, helped elect a Congressman and a Governor, and served on the staffs of both. During the 80âs I was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade, trading financial futures. Susan and I preside over something like an 18th century family: we have 4 children (a teacher, an investment banker, a wine distribut...Expand for more
or, and a building contractor) and 4, 8, or 10 grandchildren . . . depending on how you want to count them. I still get up every morning to feed the chickens and pigs, let the goats and sheep out to pasture, and direct the farm staff on the dayâs harvest which we sell to restaurants in Chicago. I am still active in the Chicago "food scene" as a Board member of the Chicago Green City Market and the Frontera Farmer Foundation. Four years ago, we became the first US farm to join FeatherDown, a unique up-scale farm stay network of European and UK farms. Weâre booked solid every season and now enjoy being a destination for interesting people in the summer as well as for family and friends year round.
