David's Story
Workplace
My first real job was in the USMC. I joined in 1965, went to Vietnam in 1967 and left the service in 1968 as a Staff Sgt.. In 1969 I joined the Oakland Police Dept. and served in every section of the Police Dept.. From Patrol to Youth services and under cover narcotics officer. The last four years of my career was spent as Director of OPD's PAL (Police Activities League) program I retired in 1995. My next job was in the Superior Courts as a Court Attendant (civilian Bailiff in the Civil Courts). I left there in 2003 and am currently a Private Investigator (PI) in the San Francisco Bay area.
I moved from the Bay Area to the Sierra Nevada Foothills, in October of 2004. It's in the Gold Country or Mother Lode. I live in a small town called Valley Springs. ...Expand for more
It's about 35 miles East of Stockton, near Hwy 49 between Jackson & Angels Camp (where they have an annual frog jumping contest started by Mark Twain.) I'm still a PI but in October of 2007 I joined the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department as a Bailiff then a Back Ground Investigator. Just as I was beginning to enjoy myself the County got in a financial bind nad they are layinng off 16 of us. So I'll be back to working the PI business, which is not very good up here. In the Bay Area I was making about a $1,000 a month on top of my OPD returement. Now I still get my retirement with full medical, but I'm lucky if I make $25 a month. My wife Jan works for Continental Airlines. They just told her they were cutting back, so she will lose her job at the end of August.
