David's Story
After graduating from San Jose State, I joined IBM for a position in the Honolulu Branch Office. During my career with IBM, I spent time in all areas of the high tech business: in both technical and sales support; in sales as a national manager of education and public sector marketing, in development as both a chief programmer (early in my career) and then towards the end of my career as the Product Line Manager for Multi Media Applications; and, several stints in the IBM Research Division.
I retired in 1993 as the Program Director of Customer and Business Development for the IBM Research Division (world wide), then moved back to Portola Valley (behind Stanford) from Greenwich, CT.
After retirement I've been doing lots of volunteer work (Beach Watch, Ano Nuevo, Golden Gate Raptor Org, Alcatraz Bird Count, water quality monitoring, Red Cross, CERT, ham radio, hazardous materials spill handling, feeding homeless, volunteering in my daughter's schools...) I actually coached Cheryl Burke of Dancing with Stars fame, in both volleyball and basketball, when she was in middle school. I've also taken up birding and I travel the United States adding to my life's bird list. Sometime I'm actually going to have to add them all up and then consider international bird travel. Update: body joints are catching up to me. Don't know whether it was judo in college or all the other stuff since, e.g. mountain climbing/hiking when I was much younger. I've actually decided to retire from many activities because of my knee and my hips are also acting up, under stress. October 2019 is my last beach survey. I'll miss them; but I know I will start other activities.
I am starting a high school films program for San Francisco Oceans Film Festival. Update: great idea, didn't work out, my failure. I decided I needed to be able to create a film, if I was going to "sell this". I'd helped create a 'movie production studio, in Yorktown Height NY, back in the day when making a movie was a really big deal and project. I saw multiple phd's fail at producing films. It was just too complex, at the time. A film was never created in this studio, without professional 'outside' involvement. I tried to talk my daughter out of creating a film in middle school, because it was too complex; but I bought her 'state of the art' programs and equipment to pursue her film. She created an incredible professional film. Also, I've attended workshops in film making with 'point and shoot' cameras and basic programs that come on a Mac of PC. I got the commitment of scientists, O'Neal school program, and marine labs to work with students; but I could never get over my research experience and (falsely) knowing that it was just too complex for me to do..... so, even though film making has moved from VERY complex to relatively simpl...Expand for more
e, my mind didn't make the transition; I dropped the project. One of my failures (can't think of too many in my life; but this was definitely one). If anyone wants to pursue this, I'd more be willing to help; but you've got to be able to create good quality films on 'point and shoot' cameras and free software on both Mac and PC. BTW, you might enjoy a short film that Casey and her significant other created on YouTube. Just do a YouTube search on ' Vermin - Horror Short Film'. I think you'll find it fun!
I have a fantastic wife who is also a retired IBM business executive; and, I talked her into retiring from a second career as a buyer for Kepler's Book Store.
Our daughter was the lead singer for her HS jazz band, travelled twice to European festivals with especially great reviews in Italy. She subsequently received a jazz vocal scholarship to UCLA and classical voice and jazz vocal scholarships to USC. She graduated cum laude from UCLA in anthropology, enjoying digs in Central America. After becoming allergic to ancient dust, she is now pursuing a career in the Hollywood movie business. Update: at the age of 30, she decided to pursue teaching; moved to Nashville Tn; and attended Vanderbilt College, where she got her masters in just 13 months. BTW, she had performed on 'Nashville Row' in her 20's. Today she is an elementary teacher in L.A.
So far, so good; but, life seems to be giving us boomers a challenge with the dot com bust, the current recession and housing in the tank. Maybe I'll have to come out of retirement. Think anyone would want an old hack, except MacDonald's or Starbuck's? I can't believe it, even my Starbuck's stock is tanking. Update: Starbuck's is doing much better along with my other stocks. Housing is way up (probably need to sell and move to Hawaii). So, I've keep enjoying my retirement.
Hope all is well with you; and, I'm looking forward to next reunion. I wish one could tailor reunions to include kids that left Sunnyvale HS before graduation, kids from Fremont that I hung out with, along old lost college buddies.
Hope all is well with you. BTW, I am now taking up ukulele and nature photography. I REALLY love the Santa Cruz Ukulele Club. Update: Can't believe that it's been so long since I've looked at this profile. I started and have run the Ukulele Club of Silicon Valley for over 10 years. We have over 800 members on my mailing list. But, it's time to move on. So, after over 10 years, I'm giving my last monthly jam session this month (October 2019) at Dana Street Roasting Co in Mountain View. However, I have committed to give occasion jams at the historic and rebuilt Alpine Inn in Portola Valley - the place where the Kingston Trio actually got their start. Now I need to winnow my collection of over 50 ukuleles.
Hope all is well with you.
