David 's Story

Life Met the miracle that made my life complete in May of 1965; not the person I could live with….but the person I couldn’t live without! It was simultaneously the most fortuitous and serendipitous happening of my life!; basketball quickly moved into a very distant second place; she was 16 and the embodiment of heaven; I was 17 and, suddenly, nothing else mattered; it was literally the proverbial love at first sight! (she had me at "Hi!"); the attraction was instantaneous, impossible to miss, exciting and intense, totally unexpected, growing quickly to unconditional status where it remains absolutely true to this day; this miracle's name was Maryjane and my life was changed forever; corny as it may sound, I had found my soul mate!; she attended the Academy of St. Aloysius and I was hooked!; marriage followed a little over 4 years later and was blessed with 3 loving daughters, Elizabeth, Melissa, and Jane; 3 additional marriages have added 7 more blessings that we call grandchildren who answer, sometimes, to the following names: Zachary, Catherine, Alexander, the twins Amanda and Emma, Nicholas and Cecelia Jane….pieces of work all!; we have essentially daily interaction with these true gifts from God; "What's-Her-Name" and I wouldn't be able to identify anything that we would rather be doing with our time and energies; and that is beautiful!; bleed dat! As the years zip by, I want to acknowledge what has become, for me, an increasingly apparent truth: there exists nowhere on earth a place that I could go nor price I could pay for the very life I have the privilege of living each day with the freedoms that we have in this blessed country. I am fortunate and rich beyond all expectation. I will, with a sense of profound gratitude and humility, try to maintain this animus until my mission here is complete. I do, however, reserve the right to have as many laughs as I can enroute. School Absolutely and without question the most inspiring teacher I had during 8 years in OLV was Sister Anna Marion; you either got inspired or you bled! (your choice!); although I didn't enjoy it at the time, I would suggest that her pedagogic techniques induced changes in my behavior that may not have occurred otherwise; for that I am truly appreciative; also, it was very challenging to seek the correct balance between being caught as a transgressor of some rule and actually causing someone else to become the focus of her wrath for a similar violation (I didn't say she cured me of my wise guy antics!); it was a fine line...and many of us willingly and warily walked it...some amongst us raised it to an art form! I attended Marist High School for freshman year at the insistence of the previously mentioned Sister Anna Marion. I discovered that Marist had a very large supply of 'inspirin' instructors, more than willing to inspire you whenever they thought you needed 'inspirin!'; in fact, they enjoyed 'inspirin' you more than just about anything else!; at the end of the year, I was inspired to go to Snyder High School and off I went. I had been regaled with many a story by public high school friends about what they got away with in the public school school domain and I couldn't wait to get started! I was assigned to HR 301 with Giacomo Restivo...my bad!; "like" it was lucky you could breathe in there (my personal all-time favorite line was the following gem: "I'll spri...Expand for more
ng on you like a panther on a lamb!"; [can't you just picture that?]); then I went to study hall with somebody called Lenny Krieger and I was sure that there was no way a little teacher guy like him could possibly control so many kids at once; wrong again!; then there was this wacko shop teacher who seemed to want to electrocute you as much as the Marist brothers wanted to give you a tuneup!; what was happening?; factor in the nerve-rattling Cuban Missile Crisis and the subsequent 'world-altering' JFK assassination for good measure and you'll get the idea!; anyway, things settled down as I began learning to work the system. Hey, I'm still here! College I went to Jersey City State College to become a physics teacher and became a chemistry teacher; so much for original intentions!; senior year (1968-69) I was sent to Ridgefield Park High School for Student Teaching and I didn't leave until 2004. I earned a master's degree in 1974 from JCSC. Workplace During my college years, I spent two summers working at Colgate's (Jersey City), and despite what my uncles told me, there wasn't a difficult job in the place. I also spent two summers (seemed like 30!) in Metro Glass (also Jersey City and felt like Hades!) and there wasn't an easy job in the place; here I learned how to deal with people who had become unbalanced because of the heat and temperatures to which they were subjected; dealing with the unbalanced for whatever reason is a skill that comes in mighty handy during the course of one's life!; I still can't believe that was a union shop! I was a chemistry teacher at Ridgefield Park High School for 35 years, before retiring in 2004; for 12 years during my teaching career I drove Greyhound buses up and down the east coast in the summer or on weekends and vacations from school; additionally, I spent about 8 summers at Picatinny Arsenal working for the Army and/or a consulting firm on liquid propellant research. Now I aid and assist "She Who Must Be Obeyed" in the nurturing, the care, and delivery to varied locations and activities of our 7 grandchildren as we are needed; teaching and bus driving were wonderful, rewarding endeavors, but this is the best job I've ever had. Military I never had the honor of serving my country and countrymen in the military; I have nothing but profound respect and utmost admiration for those who did; to those of my generation who made that choice...a well-earned and unqualified thank you for your that service; you served in ways that would be impossible for those who didn't to fully understand; history makes clear the scope of the debt owed to past generations in the creation and defense of the "grand experiment" that is our republic; that same history has amply demonstrated that freedom isn't at all free; the price of said freedom is, and always will be, an eternal vigilance coupled with a willingness of those who live in freedom to put aside the self to protect that freedom; the fervent hope here is that all who served, have come to be fully acknowledged and recognized for all aspects of that most honorable service; may they enjoy all that life can offer; to those intrepid heroes who are no longer with us, I say your incredible sacrifices will serve as beacons for future generations to use as examples of selfless dedication to duty and country! Thank you for your dedication to service and your example.

Be careful what you wish for...
Why not be TOTALLY HONEST?...the author of this poster has an agenda...the suggestion being that America has not been the greatest country in the world over the course of more than 2 centuries because of her bellicose nat
