David's Story

Life It is now November 4, 2013, and time to update my profile, which is almost four years old. I've had some interesting revelations lately including the fact that one of my mother's first cousins is now the Assistant Police Commissioner in New York City (yeah no joke!) and that a first cousin of mine is Facebook friends with Robert Downey Jr (no joke - no clue how that happened!). Other than that my life is pretty boring :). So, here goes on what's been going on with me since high school: My Spouse I met her in chemistry class in Trenton State College. We split up a year and a half later and then got back together 6 years later. We were married 10 years (almost to the day) after we started dating. We just celebrated our 25th anniversary. She is currently working at home as a CAD designer for a land survey company, but with the economy as it is, doesn't have much work. She also works part time at our local community college tutoring and helping in the student center. My Kids Two boys born 1989 and 1990 (yep, 15 months apart), and two girls born 1993 and 1997. My oldest graduated high school Valedictorian and graduated ASU in 2012 Summa Cum Laude in Business, enjoys playing soccer and various musical instruments. He married in January of 2007 and has a 6 year old boy, 2 year old girl, and newborn baby boy (yes, and I am a grandfather 3 times). He then divorced and married a different girl (and had child 2 and 3). My younger son just turned 23, graduated high school as Salutatorian. He played flute for 10 years and soccer for 13 years. He took up trombone to play in various bands and graduated ASU Summa Cum Laude in Engineering in May of this year. He is also a video game fanatic and was on a world class Counterstrike: Source team for a while. He is engaged and planning to get married to his college sweetheart in May of next year. He wants to get an engineering job but wants to stay in Phoenix, so his options are pretty limited for entry level positions, unfortunately. He is currently working for Geek Squad. My oldest daughter, now 20, played flute for 5 years, and played soccer for 9 years. She graduated high school in 2012 and is currently a sophomore at ASU. She is in the Nursing program at ASU and plans to become a nurse practitioner. Along with going to school she is working part time, and finding it all very challenging. My youngest daughter is 16 and a junior in high school. She has played flute and percussion, is now taking piano lessons, and has played soccer for 12 years. She has quite a personality and is probably the most vocal of the bunch. She is also the smallest. She is planning on becoming a pop singer/songwriter and currently has 3 of her original songs recorded - her website is danielleglickmusic.com and she also has a soundcloud site at soundcloud.com/danielle-glick-music. My Pets We currently have one cat (a white tri-color) and one dog (a mini poodle). We got rid of the rats years ago so the then 12 year old could get her own cat which she mothered heavily in her room, keeping her away from the big bad dog and the worse other cat (that has since gotten lost). The fish died and the ferret developed a cancerous tumor so we put it down. My career: I finally sold the pizza place, and tried the computer business in this small town for 2.5 years. In 2007 the bottom fell out so I sold the business and decided to go to work for someone else for the first time in 25 years. So, I worked for Cox Communications for almost 3 years, starting out as a technical support agent and ...Expand for more
then was promoted to high speed Internet Outsource Support Specialist. We outsourced to Rochester NY and Bismarck ND so I made trips to those places a couple of times a year. In 2010 I chose to quit Cox (too much politics in a big company for my tastes) and give it another go in the computer business. It's up and down but just taking it day by day. School Looking at the questions to inspire writing in this section does bring back some vivid memories. Ummm - ok. School was not my best subject growing up, but there were a few bright spots. My crushes growing up: my first crush was in second grade - Valerie Archangel. Her ears were pierced and she would wear attractive earrings, and I thought she was very pretty. I had several crushes on different girls over the years, but I had no confidence in myself (a result of my upbringing) so they were very silent. Regarding teachers, I think my absolute favorite teacher was Miss Farino in second grade, who became Mrs. Lyons. Compared to her, all my other elementary school teachers were witches. Mrs Polwin was kindergarten, and I was always at the bad table. Some confidence booster. I couldn't say her name right, either, because I couldn't pronounce 'l', so her name to me was Mrs Polwin. In kindergarten, I remember a girl throwing up right at the table I was sitting at - on the table. Anyway, getting back to teachers: Miss Hosey was first grade, Mrs Pender was third, Mrs Turkeltaub was fourth, Mr Estell was fifth, and Mrs Minno was sixth. I enjoyed the split session classes in 4th grade until the Kennedy School was finished. It was cool to go to school for only 1/2 day during that time. The best experience I ever had with a teacher, and I hope I thanked him enough at the time, was Mr. Lyons, the principal of the Lincoln/Roosevelt school in 6th grade. He helped me with long division for a week or so after school, and after that I went on to have among the best grades in the math class for the rest of the year, and at least one time the only 'A'. I went on to really enjoy math in school. I also liked Mrs Jerome, the choir teacher in 6th - 8th grades. She was always friendly and seemed to enjoy what she did. I know the boys used to watch Mrs Scheili's rear shake in 9th grade English. She used to wear tight skirts that would accent the movement when she was writing on the chalk board. She was an ok teacher too. My most embarrassing moment in school - in fifth grade, Mr Estell's class. I was telling the story about how I ended up with stitches in the back of my head by falling backwards in the bathtub, and he said, "What did you fall on, your little rubber ducky?" Well, as an adult it doesn't sound that bad, but I turned beat red, and my parents wondered why I ended up with a 'D' in conduct that quarter. Mr Butler in the Eisenhower Middle School was an interesting character. He had two fingers missing on one of his hands, and the thing everyone dreaded was the famous hand pin, where he would pin your neck up against the wall with his three fingered hand in a perfect hold. Mine was never pinned. College I went to Trenton State College (now the College of NJ I believe) in the '78-'79 school year. The only thing I got out of it was my wife :-) I also went to Yavapai (ask me how to pronounce it!) College and took several business related courses over the years. I went back to school online in 2007 and now have my Associate's Degree in Information Technology. I am currently continuing on for my Bachelor's Degree. Work and school at the same time - SO much fun!
