David's Story

Life I currently live in Atlanta (after some wonderful years in Japan and Seattle) and am happily married to an outstandingly wonderful woman who God led into my life. She being an entrepreneur herself, has been amazingly patient as my career builds. Anyone who can put up with *my* shinola for as long as she has put up with it is a very special person. I have a son from a previous marriage and a daughter... yes... a daughter... (God has a phenomenal sense of humor.) After eight years as a navy musician (every girl's father's worst nightmare... both musician AND sailor), I quickly learned that there wasn't much call in the world for a saxophone player who could steer a submarine. I spent a few years in advertising sales and publishing and then opened a graphics/printing/marketing consulting company called "400 Pound Gorilla Promotions..." One day while delivering some materials to one of my clients, some guy said he would need to see them. I asked "...and you are?" "I'm the new partner." Which started a brand new relationship in my life which has been nothing short of amazing. I was brought on board into management of that Brazilian steakhouse and had an amazing trip through publishing magazines, bringing in major bands from Brazil to do shows for the Brazilian community here in Atlanta, launching an exotic car sales company, to what I presently do, Management and the Director of Marketing for Luckie Food Lounge next to the Georgia Aquarium. I have also opened a hair/beauty salon for my wife in Marietta. We've just about finished the entire project and currently have four stylists, a massage therapist, two nail techs and a Brazilian wax specialist (I am NOT getting in that chair!!!) There's always something going on, and I am enjoying each challenge that comes my way. School BAND GEEK!!! If I had known back then what I know now, I would have been a jazz pinhead instead of a classical music pinhead (the sax is a lot cooler than those other strange horns I was playing!), and I would have toned down the "eccentric a-hole" part of me. While the eccentric side (okay... the a-hole side) of me led to some wonderful friendships, it also kept me from getting to know a lot of folks who, hindsight being 20/20, would have had a lot in common if I had bothered to look. They weren't being stuck-up... I was shutting them out. Jeez... I'm starting to sound like one of those chick-flicks! Military Some of the most fun years of my life! "We the Navy Bandsmen..." If you were there, you know what I am talking about! Take out all of the negative stuff, such as some bosses who couldn...Expand for more
't play their horns, and between Japan and Seattle, life as a military musician was EXCELLENT! The jazz bug bit me and bit me hard. I I miss the trips on "the evil van," "pile-on alley," impromptu jam sessions (or purge sessions), the cool gigs (just the cool ones), and the saga of Igor Laryonav. I got to see so many things and got to go to a lot of places that I would not have gone to. Hmmm... it says to list some of my favorite military memories... Aaa-ight!: Igor Laryonav... the man... the legend... the put-on! It was so nice I had to list it twice. I don't know how much mileage I have gotten from that story! Stan Bielski's vaudeville moments, such as the hold-up with the french bread. Mike Holguin's Giant Drumsticks Chuck Arnold's Big Thick 18oz Buttsteak, Hot and Spicy, Sweet and Meaty Pile-ons Harvey Mabel's Three-Tongues Theory Scott Davenport's example of leadership. Pork Chop and me sneaking off for doses DP... well... How Ya Gonna Act?!?! Dave McQueen and Kevin Bradley... you don't need comedians when they're around... they keep you rolling! BONES! The Evil Van "If you cared half as much about playin' your horn as you do about having others clean toilets, you'd be a helluva player!" "Haircut. Tomorrow." (military life wasn't kind to those of us who were, shall we say, follically gifted at the time) Willie Harris passing the baton to me for a gig. (as much as I would love to claim it was because he had faith in me and my ability to lead a band, honesty comples me to admit that it actually had a lot more to do with a saxophone getting left on a loading dock) We Was Robbed! (contrary to popular belief, I didn't write that one.) Mutiny on the Flagpole (again, not one of mine, but I received a lot of... er... "credit" for it... I wish I had gotten to see it.) The Gene Rosati Choke Anything having to do with Dan or Tim Blunck Dave Langett's band Kangaroo Court "I'm gonna have to go check that out!" Diane Beegle and I flipping each other off as she sang "one hand in my pocket and the other one is giving the peace sign" Wil Scott... Navy Rabbit Teri LaQue's professional, no bull-shinola, here's how it is, not playing games approach to doing business. Wow... life in general would be *much* easier if people would just be candid with each other. For what it's worth, that earned a lot of respect from me. Thanks for that, Teri. And last... but not least... Doug Shore... the man had a lot to do with my becoming a navy musician to begin with. He believed in me and stuck his neck out for me. I will always be grateful for that. "Thanks for the memories."
