David's Story

I, David was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, but moved with my mother and sister to Canada in Dec. 1953, settling first in West Vancouver close to relatives. I attended Pauline Johnson and Hollyburn Elementary schools, then Sir William Dawson in the Fall of 1954 after we moved to a house on Davie St., then over to Barclay just north of Thurlow. That would be grade 4 but then moved to Tennyson in Kits, then Edith Cavell near Cambie and 21st for the start of 1955. Then to Lord Tennyson again 10th Ave & Cypress 1955-56, Then finally came back to Dawson Jan. 1957 where we lived at The Elgin apartments 961 Howe St. and graduated into KGHS in 1959. I continued at King George until Dec. 1962 when I moved to Vancouver Island near Nanoose Bay, and finished high school at Qualicum Beach Elem-Secondary school and graduated in 1963. I put myself in the KGHS class of 63 as that would be the year I would have graduated if we had stayed in Vancouver. I returned that summer to attend UBC and looked up old friends, some who also were going to UBC, and visited the new school on Denman to talk to some teachers. I spent 3 years at UBC then quit to pursue a career in photography, a subject I became heavily involved in while at UBC. I worked at Kerrisdale Cameras for 22 years until late 1988 doing commercial and retail sales and doing some professional photography on the side. It was at the start of work at Kerrisdale that my name became Scotty Henderson. That was because there was another David working there already, so in order to avoid confusion, I said call me Scotty, as it was an old nickname from when I first came to Canada due to my thick Scottish accent. Only my remaining family, mostly nieces call me David n...Expand for more
ow. I joined Commercial Electronics on Burrard St for the next 16 years in professional sales and engineering. In 2005 I was offered a job at UBC by one of my clients, and accepted and have been there for the last 10 years as I write this in 2015, now Sr. Maintenance Engineer for Audio Visual systems as part of the IT department, Still happily working away at a job I love, maintaining the hi-tech audio visual equipment in classrooms, some of which I had installed while at Commercial. Retirement beckons, but I've put it off as I'm in good health and ... well, it's complicated. My schools include KGHS, QBHS, UBC, Langara College (German 1971, Spanish 1974), BCIT (Management 1985), many trade shows and technical seminars and courses over the years. I attended a reunion at KGSS I believe in the early 90's and met a number of old schoolmates. For some reason I missed out on getting a reunion booklet of the event so it is a bit fuzzy. Maybe someone remembers when that was and can jog my memory. Music David likes includes Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones, Beatles, Michael Jackson. Gabor Szabo, Ed Sheeran, and many more. One of David's favorite quotes is: "Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live. - Mark Twain". Update April 22, 2023 - I retired from my work at UBC the end of 2016 and have stayed on campus where I live on Wesbrook Mall since 2008. So 6 and a bit years retired now and busier than ever. There seems no end of things to do. People can connect with me on facebook by searching for Scotty Henderson where I have a longtime presence plus post on photographic and historical groups related to Vancouver and rail systems in BC.
