David's Story
Life
Iwas born in Spokane Washington. I attended Lincoln elementary through 5th grade. My friends and I played cowboys in all the vacant land between 5th and 6th streets by Deacones hospital. I moved to Camden Arkansas in 1955 and lost my only sibling, my sister in an auto/train wreck in October of that year. My parents divorced and my mother and I came back to Spokane for my 7th grade at Irving elementary, and then to Bethleham Conn. for the eigth grade. I did the 9th grade in Camden AR and went to Concord Calif. after my mother remarried, for the 10th grade, then back to Spokane to graduate from Shadle Park. I tried college back in Concord Calif. but had my heart set on a girl from high school. She seemed to like men in uniform and I joined the Army.I married Maggie Wagner from our class at Shadle Park High, went to Nam three days later, and served with the 117th Assult Helicopter compny. I came back a changed man from all I had seen and done. I went to college on the GIBill at EW, but got asked to leave after one term, went to Spokane Falls Community college for two years, graduated Whitworth in 1971, went to work for the State of Idaho as a social worker for nine years, doing child protection, adoptions, fos...Expand for more
ter care, developmental disabilities and parenting education. We lost two children, adopted two boys, we lost our marriage of almost 15 years. I went to work for the VA helping other Nam Vets, got remarried to Anne Lindeman in 1981. She is an RN, We moved to Tacoma WA in 1985 after I finished my Masters in Psych. at Gonzaga University. I loved my job helping other Veterans, so many stories about the effects war has on peoples lives. If you weren't there you can't imagine what these people did and how big the price was, or how heavy the burdens they carried.
I retired Sept. first of 2004. Retirement is great, we moved to Allyn WA to a small log home on a private lake. It is very peaceful and a great place to meditate as part of my spiritual practice. My oldest son Brad was just promoted to GS-12 at his job in Seattle and we are very proud of him. All six of our grandchildren are doing well and keep us busy. My wife Anne left mental health nursing and is back at hospital nursing doing med/surg and oncology. We love to travel when we can to Hawaii, Arizona, and New Mexico. My mother lives in Deming NM so we visit her. We have friends on O'ahu and KAUA'I and the islands are our favorite destination.
