David's Story

In high school i was on the basketball team for 3 years which I spent on the bench. I enjoyed practice. In Baseball I was a pitcher. I played all 4 years.and had some occasional highlights. After High school I managed to flunk out of two college for lack of applying myself. I had maintained an 85 average in high school without studding and thought I could do the same in college. I was wrong. I enlisted in the Marines for 4 years. I did two tours of duty in Vietnam. when I returned to g the states I was assigned to a base North ;Carolina. I married the former Margaret De Illy. 46 years later we are still married[ and have raised two daughters. They are both successful in their careers. They live close by and we see them often. The marines changed me. I was given responsibilities and made staff Sargent during my four year enlistment. I turned down the offer to become an officer and kept with my plan to get out of the service. I enrolled in Ulster County community College as soon as I got out of the marines. My experiences in the Marines had shown me that hard work and dedication were the routes to success. I graduated from UCCC top in my section and went to work at IBM. Later IBM paid all my expenses to attend North Carolina State unit and I graduated with a 4.0 average with a degree in Business M...Expand for more
anagement. Did the Marine corps make me smarted? No, but it showed me the importance of self discipline and how to apply myself to a challenging task. After 37 1/2 years I retired from IBM. I now volunteer teach 5th graders who are at risk for math or science. I always wanted to do this and now I can Me, my wife, and our two daughters have season ticket[s to DUKE woman's basketball. We go to away games including the conference tournament and any venues that are close. Over the years I have gotten my favorite players to autograph my Duke shirts. I have enough work to do in the 2 1'3 acres to keep me busy fo;r the next 18 months. It is coming along great. Now in 2015, I am 2 1/2 years behind. I coached girls softball in a recreational league for 14 years and I coached girls basket ball for 5 years. God has given me a great life and I am giving back to God. I am a certified lay speaker in the Methodist church. I missed the 50 year reunion but did make the 55 year reunion. So many of our classmates are no longer with us. I have fond memories mof pine Bush but it occurs to me that I have been on North Carolina longer. My older daughter went to Duke university on a scholarship and the spent 4 years in the airforce before she resigned as a major. Margaret has finally retired from teaching. .
