Life After graduating from Crawford HS, I got a part time summer job as a gardener and became interested in bicycles. I was also interested in backpacking and was the president of a backpacking Explorer Post (like Boy Scouts, only older and they include girls), where I met my eventual bride, Helen (Crawford class of '76). I went on to San Diego State University. My initial major was Environmental Engineering 'cause I wanted to save the environment. As that course of study seemed to be headed toward design of better sewage treatment facilities, I changed my major to Mechanical Engineering. I worked part-time as a bicycle mechanic and saved enough to buy my first racing bicycle, which I rode everywhere. In my junior year, I got a job as a student engineer at Naval Ocean Systems Center in Point Loma.
