David's Story

Life Well...it's been an interesting time for me since graduating from Granby in 1984. Since that time period I've been in the USAF and still serving. I currently work as a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor. (For some of you who may have known me then, you might find that one hard to believe). My career has carried me around the world and back four times. Germany, Turkey (2), and Korea. (I'm actually in Korea now Sep '07). Well I have three daughters’ ages 21 y/o, 19 y/o and 7 y/o and there is even a granddaughter in the picture too. I plan to serve at least 2 more years before I retire in the MD/DC area. This is where I'm heading after I leave Korea next year. Military - Entered Active Duty 13 Feb '84 Look out Lackland AFB here I come.- Graduated Basic Training 3 Apr '84. Took a long bus ride across town to Fort Sam Houston to learn how to be a Mental Health Counselor. - Departed for Wiesbaden, Germany for a three your tour. I always wanted to visit Germany, but when the time came, I was scared to leave home. -- - Left Germany Aug '88 interesting tour met some good people. Next destination, Lackland AFB, TX. Not exactly what I was hoping for. - I spent the next 5 years in San Antonio, Texas. 2 Yrs at Wilford Hall, the Mecca of Military medicine, and 3yrs at Brook's AFB, TX still in San Antonio. Getting a lil tired of the Southwest and looking to go now. Looks like I'm crossing the pond again. This time Incirlik AB, Turkey -Incirlik Jun '03-'05. One of the best times of my career as far as making some life time friends. Management had issues, and was glad to leave because of this reason. Looking to get back to VA, but not in the crystal ball. Colorado Springs, CO here I come. -Colorado... Peterson AFB....home of Air Force Space Command. Beautiful area, but too far from home and not enough ethnic culture. Looking to make the great escape at my first opportunity. Three years later opportunity knocks! East Coast here I come :-) -Jul '98 I leave god's country (they called Colorado Springs this) and I'm headed to The Navy Consolidated Brig, Charleston, SC. I spend the next 3 yrs providing counseling and substance abuse services to member of the armed forces that have been incarcerated. My skills were really put to the test. Another good assignment, but you got it...it was tim...Expand for more
e to go, and I had no idea where I would head next. To my surprise, I'm headed to the Nation's Capital. - Bolling AFB, DC not really what I was looking for, but I was still on the East Coast and even closer to home. I arrived about 2 weeks before the event to change the face of our Nation forever, 9/11. Just like many of you I can remember exactly what I was doing, and being it impacted the city in which I lived, I saw the impact. I visited the Pentagon on several occasions too. Hmmm I was actually slotted to work at the Pentagon, but due to some issues, it did not happen. Three years in DC was expensive, and the education system was the worse I had ever experienced. Having 2 school age kids presented a challenge. They by no means had experienced growing-up in an urban area that was quick to victimize its prey. Coupled with me having the supervisor from hell I was looking to get out of there at the earliest moment. So I did what most desperate folks do in the Military, I volunteered to go to Korea, and I also added Turkey back to my list. It was Aug '03 and my supervisor from hell decided it was time for her to retire...life was looking good again, but two days later I received an advance phone call alerting me of an assignment. My first thoughts were oooh shit, I’m headed to Korea, but it was not the case. They got me again for Turkey. There's a rumor about the military member's assigned to Turkey. It is rumored the US pays the Turkish government $10, 0000 for each service member assigned there. This money is supposed to allow the US Military to send any previously stationed member back to Turkey for a 10 yr period, without out having to pay another $10,000. You guessed it; my 10 yrs had not elapsed. I say this is a rumor, but I have encountered numerous people who had returned in the 10 yr window, some as volunteers and others "voluntold". Well back to the "lik" as we called it, from May '04 - Aug '05... The second time around was better than the first time. Times up and now I'm off to Tucson, AZ. Davis-Monthan AFB. Spent 2 years there Aug '05-Jul '07. I'm sitting here now updating this form Kunsan AB, ROK, where I will remain for 1 yr. 1 month down and 11 to go. So far, not bad at all. My final destination will take me back to the MD/DC area, Andrew's AFB. 22 yrs later, still go'n
