David's Story
Life
After graduation, I went off to college to pursue the dream of becoming a lawyer and, eventually, U.S. Secretary of State. I wound up doing too much theatre, too much partying, and attending too few classes. Dropped out after a year-and-a-half and moved to California with the new dream of becoming a (published) musician.
In 1978, the music world was still in love with disco. I wrote ballads. I traded my motorcycle for a plane ticket and moved back to Michigan.
Went back to college to complete my degree. After a year, I dropped out (again) to get married.
Discovered that the working world doesn't give any extra credit for what one may have hoped to be or hoped to have learned. With no real job skills (or prospects), I joined the Navy. Became an Electronics Technician/Reactor Operator. Did my time, finally applied myself, and was honorably (there's a surprise!) discharged.
By this time, I had two daughters. Spent the next 20 years wiping runny noses, convincing Adrienne and Erin that there was really no such thing as the Boogey-man, coaching sports and academic teams, chasing off u...Expand for more
nsavory would-be boyfriends and fixing cars that should have long since been relegated to the junk yard. In other words, I learned to be a father.
Youngest daughter (my artist) got married. Eldest daughter moved out (after completing her degree and finding work as an R.N.).
Once both girls were out of the house, my wife of over 20 years decided to move out as well...and left to pursue new opportunities.
Sometime during my purging of what had once been our home, I received an e-mail via Classmates.com from Fawn Waidelich...the girl I dated my entire Senior Year!
The rest, as they say, is history. It took a while to convince her, but I finally got her to say "yes" and change her last name to Nelson (For real, this time...yes, the Senior Prom marriage was a hoax!).
Between us, we have five children (three sons, hers; two daughters, mine), six grandchildren, three dogs, a cat, an abiding love of Country & Western music, a passion for good coffee and a burning impatience to see what life has in store for us in the next 30-50 years. We both feel as though we are co-starring in a miracle!
