David's Story
Life
Career sports photojournalist with Stars and Stripes, American newspaper serving GIs overseas. Graduated Class of '74, John F. Kennedy High School, Bellmore, N.Y. Joined Air Force Dec. 2, 1974 and have worked in government service virtually the entire time since. Got out of Air Force May 31, 1985 and have been a long-hair since then. Worked at Stars and Stripes' Tokyo office from March 5, 1981 to Aug. 8, 2003; have since moved to Stripes' Okinawa office. Husband to the former Mitsuko Honda of Suwa, Japan, since Jan. 13-15, 1983 (yes, the wedding took three days!). Father of four, Joseph Michael Tadashi (Feb. 7, 1985), Patricia Elizabeth Minami (June 30, 1988), Katherine Victoria Lan (Feb. 22, 1990) and Brian Richard Hiroshi (June 13, 1995). Grandfather of one, Vera-Jeanne Ornauer-Martinez, born in June 2008 to my son Joe and his wife Theresa. nes; from Seoul to Pusan and all points inbetween in South Korea; from Yigo to Merizo on the emerald island of Guam; Hedo to Naha and all points between on my now home of Okinawa, and have done the entire route from Misawa to Hakata on the Shinkansen in Japan. Sandwiched a visit to Taipei once; you can still see the old air base at Chiang Kai-shek International Airport when we used to have military there. Have interviewed everybody from entertainers (Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Sylvester Stallone) to sports figures (George Brett, Moses Malone, the baseball commissioners of four different nations) to important military icons, but still considers coverage of high school and military sports his first love, just as in high school. Who'd have thought I'd end up making a living doing what I did as a sideline in high school? One never knows. Dave knows he'd not have changed a thing, even from his high school days, and wishes the very best to everybody I remember from back in the day.
