David's Story

After leaving PHHS in December 1972 I put myself through college at SDSU finally graduating in December 1979, passed the CPA exam and moved to MN for six years. Affectionately calling it my period of "temporary insanity" it was an adventure I really enjoyed and a good start to my career as a CPA. In 1986 we moved back to San Diego County and settled in Encinitas establishing a successful practice in Carlsbad. In 2001 my wife and I moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as our five children were now old enough to be on their own. I lived there about half time coming back to the U.S. to keep the practice running with the help of two key employees who I brought in as partners. In 2008 we moved to Melbourne, Australia and in March 2010 came back to the U.S. for good (I think). During our time in Malaysia we volunteered at an Islamic orphanage in a suburb of K.L. spending most of our time in the nursery where the kids needed the most personal attention. There were up to about 30 children there in the nursery at any given time, age from birth to two years old, with only about 20 cribs. Conditions weren't that great at the orphanage but the employees did the best they could and older children there helped out with the younger ones. To make a very long story short, after a more than four year ordeal, we were successful in becoming the first Americans in the history of that country to adopt a child under the Sharia Law. So now we have a very special sixth child. We first met Anandi (she is Indian) when she arrived at the...Expand for more
orphanage at about 10 days old and she is now eight. I am in the process of handing over the remaining part of my CPA practice to our daughter, Kelsey (who was the youngest before Anandi came along), and is the only one who ever wanted the practice - so she gets it. I'll stay involved a little bit since it really is a whole lot of fun and I want to help out our older daughter and my busines partners. Our other children are pretty well spread out - two in MN, two in CA and one in Kunming China. We still have our home in Encinitas, office building in Carlsbad and a small ranch in the redwoods on the summit of Mt Madonna in the East Santa Cruz mountains. That's where we are at most of the time now, where Anandi goes to the Mt Madonna School and enjoys riding horses and camping out in the redwoods with her friends from the school and her nanny (or her "sister" as she calls her). For Anandi it's a long way from that orphanage in Malaysia and she truly is in love with life. Living on the mountain can almost feel like a throwback a generation or two. No television (but we have high speed internet) no cell phone coverage (that's great, really). There are only 14 homes up here and the Mt Madonna Center (an Ayurvedic yoga center where the school is located on 300+ acres). As remote as it can feel at times up here we can be in the flat lands to east or the Monterey Bay area to the west within about 30 minutes for all the modern conveniences. (picture was taken in Melbourne AU in 2008 while we were living there)
