David J.'s Story

Life My life biography. Wow, what can I say? After highschool I went on tour for the summer with the Grateful Dead and then off to college. I went to a 2 year school in upstate New York and got an Associates. After that I went to S.U.N.Y. Plattsburgh and got my B.A. in psychology. I didn't do very well in High School so I felt like had to redeem myself in college, and so I did by graduating with honors and going on to Graduate School. Thats right check out the big brain on me. Well, more like tenacity than brains. I studied to become a therapist at a place called John F. Kennedy University, a private school near Berkeley, CA. (Incidentally JFK and I share the same birthday and wedding anniversary. Uncanny.) It was a great experience and an expensive one too as I chose to pay for it with student loans (this is where the tenacity over brains part comes in). I could have gone to Ohio State with a full ride but chose otherwise. Oh well, we all make our decisions and live with the consequences. And, you're going to love this... I didn't finish the degree! Some would say, thanks to the phenomenon I like to call "unsolicited advice/opinion", and they have said that I wasted my money. But I disagree. (I was going to "beg to differ" but begging is so unbecoming). I may not have the paper but I still have the education and psychology can be applied everywhere, especially because of the nature of my training. I went through two and a half years of accademic study and finally got to the clinic... Let me tell you book psychology and applied psychology are very different. Books are so clear cut: If this then that, repeat if necessary. Applied... well what do you do when your clients tell you about countless atrocities committed against them? Eventually this kind of thing gets to you. Faced with a life...Expand for more
time of this kind of work I made other plans and dropped out of school. I realized that it takes a very particular type of person to be a psychologist and I aint it (too thin skinned, couldn't leave my clients' problems at work). So what does a grad school drop out do with himself? He goes to work obviously. I worked for an insurance company and a small start up electronics company and eventually joined the Navy. Thats right, long haired, tie dye wearing , anti establishment (just check out my senior year book quote, makes me flinch when I think about it) joined the Navy. I enlisted, yes thats right enlisted and for good reason and with no regrets. I became a Navy linguist. I went to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA and learned to read, write and speak Korean(it took 2 years). Linguist is not a job open to officers. However, I became an Officer shortly after competing language school and spent the rest of my 7 years in that capacity. I have been through boot camp twice, one enlisted and the other Officer Candidate School(OCS). I have been beat down by the best Marine Corps drill instructors that OCS could come up with. OCS is no picnic. If you ever saw "An Officer and a Gentleman" you aint seen nothing. It is a lot more intense than movies show. I left the Navy in May of 2004 to attend Chiropractic school. I graduated from New York Chiropractic College in November of 2007 and have decided to open a private practice. I am currently living in Billings, MT with my wife and our dog. What can one say about their own life? Probably a lot if you ever sat down to think about it. Hopefully a lot more than can fill the space provided here. There are so many details and reasons and happenings and sometimes I am amazed that I am where I am. Best Regards, Dr. David J. Powell
