David's Story

I grew up in Vidalia Louisiana as my family moved to Vidalia from Natchez, Mississippi when I was in the 3rd grade. I have fond memories of Vidalia and the friends I made thoughout those years. Vidalia was a great place to grow-up, make friends, play in the band and be part of a great football program. I graduated in 1965. I attended Northwestern State University for a year trying to find out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life but decided after that year to enlist in the United States Air Force. I served at Altus AFB, Oklahoma and Westover AFB, MA. Viet Nam was at its worst during that time and I spent time in Guam and Okinawa working along with my B-52 unit in direct support of the war. I was discharged from the Air Force in May of 1970. At the end of my tour with the Air Force, I enrolled in college at Northwestern State University to pursue a degree in Psychology. I graduated from NSU with a BS in Psychology in spring of 1972 and began to working on my Master Degree in Psychology. I really loved the Psychology Department and the people I met at NSU but decided that it was time I made a change in my life as my first child was on the way. One day while going through the student union building, a representative for the Air Force happen to be there. I decided to stop and talk to him........the rest is history. I entered the Air Force again but this time as an officer. I was commissioned a 2Lt. in May of 1973 and began training to become a Radar Navigator in a B-52. For the next 11 years, I was a crewmember and instructor for new crewmember coming in to the B-52 weapon system at Castle AFB, CA and accumulated more that 3,000 flying hours. In 1984, I changed jobs and became a squadron commander for a Transportation Squadrons at Minot AFB, ND, and two completely different squadrons (one transportation squadron and an Avionics Maintenance Squadron (Aircraft Maintenance) at Andersen AFB, Guam. I also worked on my Master Degree in Public Administration and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK during 1988 and 1989. My next assignment was to the Pentagon in Washington DC for 4 years. After my assignment at the Pentagon, it was off to Air War College in Montgomery, AL, then to Great Falls, MT to become the D...Expand for more
eputy Logistic Group Commander. I was reassigned to Howard AFB, Panama to become the Logistic Group Commander for the 24th Wing. After just less than 2 years, I was reassigned once again to McDill AFB, FL to the United States Central Command spending much time in Saudia Arabia and Southwest Asia. I retired from the Air Force in 1998 as a Colonel having served over 30 total years. After retirement from the Air Force, I moved to Virginia to a very small community of less than 500 people (Afton, VA). I am living my dream........my wife and I have 18 acres, a log home, two dog, two cats, and three horses. It just doesn't get better than this. I have since gone back to work to learn something new and different. I am working for the City of Waynesboro, VA in the Public Works Department working issues in environmental process and as the Superintendent of Public Works Operations with about 80 great folks working for me. We are doing some good stuff for the community........and it is fun being productive and learning new processes and be given the ability to make a difference in this community. I will retire within the next two years to ride horses and play a lot of golf. I am married to Beckie Randall who is originally from Merced California and have been for the past 25 years. She is my life mate and I could not have imagined going through my life without her by my side. Together we have 4 children: Melissa Randall, John Randall, Shelby Abbott, and Heather Abbott.........all of our "kids" are between 35 and 28. Life is good for the Randall family. We are blessed to have my Mom (85) and Dad (92) living here in Virginia with us after we moved them from Vidalia about 5 years ago. Both are now in a nursing home but are doing ok health wise. We are enjoying our time here and are looking forward to many years to live out our dream here in Virginia.................. As you go through the seasons of your life, things change. In 2011 we decided after both Dad and Mom passed it was time to move once again. We retired for the last time and moved to Leland, NC, which is near Wilmington. We wanted to be by the beaches and away from farm life. We love it here as I get to play golf 3 times a week as well as travel to see new sites. Great life!!
