David's Story

I grew up as a military brat - my dad was a career officer in the U.S. Navy. In the 50's, following the Korean War, my dad was assigned to London, England, and I began my school years there at "St Anne's Preparatory School for Boys". At the end of 1956 we moved to San Diego, where I attended the 5th grade at Cadman Elementary School in Claremont, the 6th grade at Crown Point Elementary School in Pacific Beach; and the first half of the 7th grade at Pacific Beach Junior High. The military now tries to move families during the summer, but not so much in those days, and in January of 1959, I enrolled at McMain Junior High in New Orleans. My dad was stationed at the Algiers Naval Station, and we lived just off S. Carrolton Ave in the Garden District. I completed the 7th through 9th grade at McMain, and then the 10th grade at Alcee Fortier Senior High School. Thoughts of completing high school in New Orleans were dashed when my dad received orders for Yokosuka, Japan in the summer of 1962. I completed the 11th and 12th grades in Japan, graduating in May 1964 from the Nile C. Kinnick Navy Dependents School in Yokohama, Japan. I subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Navy, completed recruit training in Great Lakes, then technical school in Bainbridge, Maryland. My first duty station was in Washington DC; however, I terminated my assignment as soon as I could and went to sea! (Sailors on ships, and ships at sea, etc.) After a two year tour on the staff of Commander, U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, I was transferred back to DC. With less than 6 months ashore, I again terminated my shore duty, and went back to sea, this time aboard the USS RANGER, an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. I completed two years and two deployments to Vietnam aboard her, and once again was transferred back to DC. I made the best of my situat...Expand for more
ion then, and spent most of my 3 1/2 years there on temporary duty at other locations. In June 1974, I transferred to Guam, where most of my tour was spent on temporary duty with the Military Customs office on the staff of Commander, Naval Forces Marianas. Following that tour, I spent three years in San Francisco managing naval reservists. I returned to Guam for a second tour in 1979, and split that tour between assignments as the command career counselor and direct support coordinator. In the Fall of 1980, I transferred to New Orleans, LA, where I completed my career on the staff of the Chief of Naval Reserve and retired in January 1984. I was employed by the Raytheon Corp following retirement for a couple of years, and then relocated to Florida to be near my parents, who were getting on in age. I was employed by the state of Florida in the juvenile justice system at a high security juvenile detention center in Bradenton until the Spring of 1988, when I was offered a position as caretaker of a 108 acre lakefront Girl Scout camp in Alabama. I left that position in the Fall of 1990 and enrolled in a local community college, where in 1993 I received a degree in Computer Information Systems. 10 days following graduation, the college hired me in the business office, from which I retired in October 2008. Since then my hours and days are taken up with a variety of volunteer activities. I'm involved in motorcycling organizations, as the mentor coordinator for the local judicial circuit's veterans treatment court, as a board member of several non profits, and as a conductor on the tourist train at the state's railroad museum. I've been married for 28 years (this time) and have two grown sons by my first wife. My oldest son is married and has two children - a boy and a girl - our only two grandchildren. Life is good!
