David's Story
Life
Hi Everyone,
I've had many jobs since high school including boatbuilding, cabinetmaking, sailmaking, roofing, painting, general home renovation, and your standard corporate crap (where I am now). I once worked as a ditch-digger shoveling dirt all day long by hand. I worked several years for a marine safety company spending much of my time aboard commercial fishing boats, freighters, tankers, and yachts.
My BA is in English Literature from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and my Masters is in Information Systems (MSIS) from Drexel University in Philadelphia. I was a computer programmer for several years, primarily dealing in small databases, then an adjunct professor of English writing at Mercer County Community College for three years. During that time, I also tutored many non-native English speakers from all around the world in English. Now, I live and work as a technical writer in Taipei, Taiwan at Trend Micro, the third largest anti-virus company in the world, the largest in Asia.
I spent several years writing short stories (fiction), then spent 2 dedicated years writing a movie and was lucky enough to have it critiqued by a Hollywood producer. I havenÂt yet sold anything. IÂm working on new ideas; my present project is about a god who does everything wrong.
I once built a kayak, then paddled it alone for approximately 300 miles along the southeast coast of Florida (along the Everglades), ending up in the Florida Keys. Once, bored with my job as a roofer, I hopped on a bicycle and pedaled from New Jersey to St. Pete, Florida. I spent 6 weeks living in the woods in Key West with the local street people, the homelessÂactually, closer to classic hobos. For 2 years, I lived on a 30 foot sailboat, mostly in Forked River, NJ, sailing that boat up and down the New Jersey coast, sometimes with friends, sometimes alone.
IÂve been to every state in the US east of the Mississippi River...Expand for more
, and only recently West of it (LA and SLC both suck!). Although I lived most of my life in Jersey, I spent ten years living in Philly, two years in Florida, and as I said, I presently live in Taiwan (two years). Before this, IÂve never been out of the country. Since living in Taiwan, IÂve been to Australia (America with an accent), the Philippines (Asia in English), Thailand (Beautiful, but Phuket--where the Tsunami struck--is far too touristy), and Viet Nam (an amazingly foreign place, poorer than poor, happy to see Americans).
Presently, I'm working on a plan to live aboard a _very_ small sailboat that I build myself and sail an ocean, see (more of) the world.
I go from reading books on economics, history, philosophy, technology, writing and spiritualityÂactually, IÂve been kind of letting go of the spirituality bit; itÂs not as complicated as they make itÂto watching (when I lived in the US anyway) the two most stupid comedy shows ever created: ÂMarried with Children and ÂGilliganÂs IslandÂ.
IÂve just finished reading a couple of books on the history and politics of Taiwan. ItÂs a colossal, confused and dangerous mess, and I find it extraordinarily interesting (Funny that no one wants to call the Fascist government of China a Fascist government).
I can talk so much about history, (light) science, technology or politics that people will tell me I am far too serious. I can act so childlike that people tell me IÂm just plain goofy. IÂm often so talkative that people think IÂm not afraid of anyone or anything. But then I am so quiet sometimes that people think IÂm a recluse (but IÂm not the person I was in high school!).
I love movies; I like exerciseÂ, weight-lifting and running mostly; I like going to a bar every now and then, but, for the most part, I live kind of a quiet, everyday life.
