David's Story

Life I've been married for 10 years (a decade now). I actually determined the number of years by counting the number of marks on my cell wall. Currently, I have two daughters, Grace, aged 9 and Sarah, aged 5. They're good looking girls, so I'm in trouble. My oldest, Grace, participates in a Center Based Gifted program in Chesterfield County, VA. She's learning to speak German and Mandarin Chinese. She became very confused when I told her that I believed that mandarin was a type of fruit or Kung-fu style. My youngest daughter Sarah started Kindergarden this year and goes to the same school as her sister. If you make her mad, she morphs into what some kids refer to as a "hitter", but at least she's not a "biter" (at least that's what we tell ourselves). They both love reading, writing and destroying my house. They're both very good at it. Recently the girls held a "Luau" in Grace's room and filled up massive water tubs to simulate the ocean. Of course they spilled alot of the water on the floor, soaking the carpet and the ceiling above the dining room. It was at that point that we had to begin a game of "ecological cleanup" (based on the Exxon Valdez tragedy). We used homemade biscuits to simulate injured seagulls. As for myself, I still listen to Metal and refuse to grow up; mainly because it's boring and I don't have to. Even though I don't sing professionally anymore, I do vocalises on the way TO and FROM work everyday. I work 9-5, and I love my job. While I'll never be "rich" monetarily, I count myself as one of the few that can go to work with a smile on my face and leave there with it still intact. I still work in local government and continue to have a good working relationship with a few folks in the Virginia Senate which has, and hopefully will continue, to benefit older Virginians. This past session I worked again with Virginia Senator Fred Quayle on some Identity Theft legislation that's been on the table for 2 years. It was defeated again, but there is general agreement that it'll pass eventually. Anyway, it's been a cool experience because it provided me the honor of testifying in front of the Senate. To continue with the positive, we did get a bill passed to amend the Virginia State Income Tax form such that Virginia's Area Agencies on Aging will likely see approximately $500,000 a year in funding to provide prescription drug counseling to Seniors and disabled persons. That money will also go to my salary, because guess what? I counsel those folks on Medicare Part D options (It's kind of a Mr. Myiagi approach to getting things done). Currently, I work at the Crater District Area Agency on Aging in Petersburg, VA and reside in Richmond, VA (technically Chesterfield County). I'm in th...Expand for more
e book. Look me up. Don't bring me down. School The type of people that I hung out with were definitely "varied". Jon Gatto-88', Joe Tennis-88' and Mike West were my closest guy friends. I played in a band called Tempest with Mike. Yeah, I know. We sucked. As to some of the girls I was into, I would say that I had the most fun around Lisa Royer 88'. She was a real "fly by the seat of your pants" kind of person. She was very intelligent, and I thought she was extremely beautiful. It has always been a regret of mine that I never tried to take the relationship beyond the friendship level. However, I lacked self confidence like most people my age. That certainly isn't the case these days. As to my most anomolous memory from that time period, it would have to be getting drunk at a Star Trek convention with Joe Tennis. We just rode the elevator up in down with these idiots who were dressed in full Star Trek regallia and speaking "Klingon". I will NEVER do that again. It's truly frightening. College I did the college degree/Graduate thing and it was there that I honed my ass-kissing skills to a razor sharp edge. After realizing that people are generally disengaged from the world on a personal level, I decided to become active in Student Government and joined every honor society I could. I figured that the more accolades I could follow up my last name with, the more people would listen to what I have to say. So far, that strategy has paid off. However, it's made me alot more disillusion with people in general. Being deathly afraid of being poor was a strong motivator as well. Workplace I'm currently a State designated advocate for Long Term Care residents in the Petersburg, VA area. I'm one of approximately 800 people who do this nationally. My job entails quite a bit of policy work, public speaking and general "hob-knobbing". I had the profound pleasure to have served in the workgroups that constructed Governor Mark Warner's Adult Protective Services Act legislation (2004) and new laws that will provide greater protection for vulnerable residents of Virginia Assisted Living facilities (2005). For the past 2 years, I've worked with Virginia Senator Fred Quayle (R) on an ID theft prevention bill which would have allowed people in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living facilities (or families on their behalf) to place freezes on their credit reports. For the past 2 years this legeslation has died in Commerce and Labor Committee, but I've got a chance to work with some good people and gleen some insight into how to get legislation passed. All in all, I love my work. One day soon I would like to make a bid for a Senate seat in Virginia. Everyday is different, rewarding and exciting. Military NA.
