David's Story

Here's a confession: While I attended Davis Elementary two blocks down Pershing Road, a number of my early childhood friends attended St. Jo's. I unwittingly created a profile here instead of there, but I am on the list at Nathan Davis Elementary too. Probably like most folks, I'm here out of nostalgia, but I'm also researching a history of Brighton Park and have already come up with some great photos of St. Joseph and St. Anne Catholic Church, the Brighton Theater, and other random shots of the neighborhood, thanks to Neil. My ancestral home on Pershing, bought and rehabilitated by my uncle in the early '60's, was built in 1903. I'm in the process of tracking down architectural/ownership records of the house and the histories of these two schools; the Brighton and other landmarks on Archer Avenue between California and Kedzie; the Fire Station at Archer & So. Sacramento; Kelly High; the precinct house on the corner of California...Expand for more
and Pershing, the Stock Yards, etc. Any leads anyone might provide--links to photos of Brighton Park dating from the 1800's forward, interesting personal stories about the neighborhood and its architectural/cultural/political/religious history--would be most welcome. I also invite email to just shoot the bull about the old neighborhood! Does anyone else besides me remember those weird parades from St. Jo's that went around the block? Was I dreaming all that? There really WAS roller-skating in the church basement, wasn't there? "Fun Fairs" across the street? Finally, If Chuckie Judd, Joe Moore, Larry Chimelewski, or Jose Haro read this, I invite all of you to drop me a line! Still, it would be pretty weird talking to childhood friends I have not seen in over 40 years! There may be a few things I would rather forget, but memory has a way of blocking those things out after so many years. It's been "a long, strange trip" so far!
