David's Story

Life Married to Martha since 1977, no children other than my occasional personal inner child flare-up! One of our earliest dates was a canoe trip on the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels, Texas, just above Canyon Lake & Dam. You know what they say about whitewater river canoe/kayak/rafting trips, don't you? They are the 3rd leading cause of breakups -- after philandering and excessive drinking. I figured that anyone who could put up with me for a repeat canoe trip, could make a go of it for lfe. Life and love goes on as I write. I hope to retire before my body wears out! 8^) [see recent announcement] 06/02/07 -- retired ... for good ..., better and best School High School was a blast -- I went to MtVTHS for 3 out of 4 years. My Junior year I was in Texas, and went to 3 different high schools -- met great people in all of them, but I couldn't wait to finish my senior year at MtV. I lived with my grandmother that year. My church group and the church league basketball were hi-lites for me. The SUB and the National Guard Armory summer activities were great that senior year. Oh, yes, I'm that "Weaver" guy from my high school days (daze?), since many of my HS classmates probably don't remember my first name (David or Dave). I've always given credit (and blame) to Mike McClure for giving me the nickname in about the 7th grade -- and it stuck for a long time. My apologies to Tim Weaver of West Frankfurt HS, my reputed look-alike. College By the time I got to college at U of Houston in '67, I was a bit older and wiser. I got into student politics and social life big time! I squeezed a bit of classes in there, too! After the first year, I worked full-time and went to school part-time. Great times at the folk-music/blues Coffee House. I will always remember Shasta III ('63-'77) -- the cougar mascot and one of my best buddies -- she was a good listener, particularly late at night when we went for the midnight romps about campus. The Cougar Guard was one of the highlites of my social activities -- great people, dedicated to a common purpose: shasta be fed, shasta be watered, shasta be taken care of. I am sure that she is enjoying her freedom in the highest of the mountain ranges. B.S Electronic Technology 1976. I crammed 4 years of college into 14 years of night-school and part-time, with one year full-time. U of Minnesota Duluth (nites when in USAF '62-'66) Later several Community Collleges over the years for all the new courses, technologies, and theor...Expand for more
ies. Workplace Somehow I was lucky enough to get in on many of the new technologies in many places that I worked: analog integrated circuits in '67, Intel 4004 microprocessor in '69, SUN Microsystems in '83 (a bit late to to the UNIX party), Intel x86 multiprocessor systems in '97 (late again), AIX & LINUX in '99 (closing the gap) and life/work still wenr on fast-n-furious. Specialized in IBM's TSM (Storage Management) for a few years. Retired from IBM (after 6 long years). Inspired by Longview Fibre to come back for a year+, but retired again. I may work part-time again some day. Military The U. S. Air Force: always a spark in my electrician's life as I migrated from volts-n-amps to microvolts and microamps on my way to & through a career in electronics and computing. I'll never forget the awesome look of the SAGE vacuum tube computer that occupied practically all of one floor of a building about a hundred yards square! (At least it seemed that big.) I was lucky enough to be able to go to night school at UM-D, so I stayed out of trouble that way. After about 2 years, I had the opportunity to move to the downtown YMCA and live there. This was great! A private room (small) and a great neighbor (Jim Mattern). We were both taking night classes at UM-D, so we traveled together quite a bit. Then we started dating sisters. That was a lot of fun, too! Good times, good friends, great memories. BIG HIGHLIGHT: seeing JFK in September 1963. Got a salute, a smile, a handshake and a photo! All in less than 10 seconds. NOW ... Duluth AFB is a federal minimum security prison, not far removed from what I felt when I lived on base. 8^) Life after retirement ... Lots of volunteer activity: CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). MRC (Medical Reserve Corps), Watershed Stewards, Stream Stewards, political party activity: recently named chairman of the WA-LD18 Dems -- 1200 SqMi, 100,000 voters ---will work at organizing for the 2012 elections. Hosting a summer intern for Organizing for America (OFA) in preparation for fall political campaign activities. She has a MS in International Politics so I may be learning from her. Life with Politics ... OK, I've done it. I have stepped off the shallow end of the pool and into the depths of the pool with no waterwings. I have filed to run as a candidate for WA State Representative in the 18th Legilative District. This should make "retirement" an interesting ride. Stay tuned, I have 2 opponents in a top-two primary in August.
