David's Story

After graduating from Roanoke College in 1972, with draft # of 6, went to Navy OCS and then Navy Supply Corps School. Spent 20 years as officer in Navy, serving on USS Dewey DLG-14/DDG-45(Med and North Atlantic deployments); Naval Facility Midway Islands; Acting Director, Current Pay Systems Division, Military Pay Systems Dept., Navy Accounting and Finance Center, Washington, D.C.; Supply Officer, USS King DDG-41,(Med and South America deployments); Asst. Comptroller, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Norfolk, VA; Director, Regional Financial Services Dept. Naval Supply Center, Norfolk, VA: Asst. Supply Officer, Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, MS; Comptroller, NAVSTA Rota, Spain; Comptroller, NAS Jacksonville, FL. During those years was married and had 3 children : Virginia (Ginny - Honolulu, HI in 1976); Julie (Bethesda, MD in 1978) and Philip (Norfolk, VA in 1980). After Navy ... wife left me with the kids and they were with me until they all headed out on their own, most after college at least. Got an MBA from Old Dominion University in 1984 and an MPA from University of North Florida in 1996. After Navy worked for University of North Florida from 1994 to 1998 as the Associate Director, Division of Sponsored Research and Training, and 1998 to 2000 as Business and Program Manager for the Florida Institute of Education. From 2000 to 2002 was the Deputy Director, Finance and Administration for the Florida Partnership for School Readiness (at that time Florida's lead agency for administering all federal/state/local funding and oversight of all subsidized pre...Expand for more
-school and PreK programs). From 2002 to 2004 was an Administrative Officer for TSA federalizing the airports in Palm Springs, CA, Yuma, AZ, and Imperial County, CA. From early 2005 until 3/29/2008 I was working for NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. The first 7 months at NASA I worked in the office that prepares mission proposals for the Center, then in November of 2005 I was selected as the Financial Manager for the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) project. That was quite an experience working on a huge international project with all sorts of interesting and brilliant scientists and engineers... not the least of which is John Mather (the senior project scientist) who was the co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics!!! Then I moved again!! Was selected effective 1 April 2008 as the Comptroller (CFO) for Commander, Navy Region Northwest out near Seattle, WA. CNRNW is responsible for all Naval shore facilities and bases (plus everything down to Reserve Centers and all the environmental issues, etc,) related to Navy in the states we cover. Those being Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming , and Montana. Biggest challenge is that I am across the country from most of my family! The kids live in San Jose, CA, and Tampa, FL. And I have 2 of 5 grandchildren that I will have to travel much further to see than I have recently!! Also, they are growing so quickly and granddaddy never can get around enough! Hope things are going well for all! Look forward to hearing from friends!
