David Spaulding:

CLASS OF 1964
New hyde park, NY

David's Story

Life I have been wondering how I should begin and what I should write given that I certainly did not develop many close friends at Herricks. However, I have decided to just let it out and let you, the recipient, judge whether it was worth the "paper" it was written upon. Obviously, I am waxing philosophical in light of my advancing age. I had an experience with my wife's reunion (she attended a small Catholic school in upstate Michigan) which was quite delightful. While I may have been "the spouse", I genuinely enjoyed her joy in reconnecting with old classmates and reliving (if only for a night) youthful memories. That really gave me the stimulus to begin the reconnection process. Making it more difficult is that fact that I was never a real social butterfly and only saw a couple of classmates outside of school. However, I decided to forge on and not let that create a barrier. The last time I connected with the class was at our 10 year class reunion. I remember it and sat with Nancy Timm and her husband - she indicated that at the time she lived in her parent’s home. The one vivid memory I have of that get-together was a "can you top this" type of social interaction. It was as if everyone was trying to show how well they had done since high school graduation. Hopefully, age has given all of us a wholly different perspective and truly focus on the important elements of life - health, family and friends. I went to college and graduated from the University of Iowa in Economics, where I met my first wife. Yes, I am unfortunately a typical boomer who has experienced divorce. We were married for 10 years and had 3 children - all boys. While at Iowa, I started working in the college food service and found a calling. After graduation, I went to Cornell University for another degree in Hotel Management. I started working for HoJo's in Buffalo and left them to work for a former boss who started a food service company in Albany. I worked there for 8 y...Expand for more
ears. During that time I divorced (in '77), went somewhat crazy and wound up getting fired in late '78. In January of '79, I went to work for an airline catering company called Sky Chefs in Boston (at the time a subsidiary of American Airlines). Two years later I was in Milwaukee and met my wife there (she was a bartender for us at the time). Two years later I accepted a promotion to the Dallas/Fort Worth area and we moved here to Arlington with one of her daughters (she has two). Quite frankly, that was a very fortuitous decision as the consequences of those decisions were very beneficial. I worked my way up to upper middle management level (Director/General Manager) where I basically stayed for 20 years. Since we were in the airline industry with an old line carrier, we participated in a small traditional pension and also able to enjoy flight privileges. After 9/11 our business dropped 60% and, after a couple of years of continual downsizing, I was approached and told to retire two years ago. I do some with H&R Block during the tax season to keep busy, keep my mind working and afford our travel. From a family standpoint, I have been blessed beyond whatever I may have expected. My three boys (ages 36, 33 and 31) all graduated from college and are doing reasonably well. One is a Captain in the Army (based now in LA), one works in NYC and sings in a band (I think he is a holdover from our hippy era) and the oldest lives near us working for a coffee shop chain. He is the only one married and has 3 children (ages 4 to 11). My wife's two daughters live near us also and both work in the Social Services area. One is married with two children (ages 11 to 13). Our family get-togethers number 12 in total which is a houseful. We love to cook and entertain and everyone is always over here for birthdays and holidays. From a personal standpoint, I am doing as well as can be expected. Like many of our boomer cohorts, I work out (albeit intermittently) an
