David Steinbrook:

CLASS OF 1976
Chillicothe, OH

David's Story

I left Chillicothe in December after graduation to join the Navy and see the world. I had married the former Bev Anders (Class of 1978 Unioto H.S.)in September and we were both ready to see the world. I was in the Navy for 8 years as an Electricians Mate with nuclear power qualifications. During my time in the Navy, Bev and I started a family, having 3 kids in all - Matthew, Andrew and Vanessa. Family separation every 3 months made the choice easy to leave the Navy and find a job in the real world. One of the Navy experiences I am proud of is being on the initial manning crew of the USS Alabama. It was very interesting to watch the boat be built section by section, and being one of the first 25 personnel assigned is a unique experience. I accepted a job as an Auxiliary Equipment Operator at Donald C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant in Bridgman Michigan after the Navy. I got my Reactor Operators license after 4 years, working in the Control Room controlling the reactor, performing startups and shutdowns and maintaining the Units online was very enjoyable work. I received my Senior Reactor Operator license 4 years later, which took away the fun stuff of actually doing the work and put me as a supervisor overseeing the work. I also finished my Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering along the way. It has had it rewards, but after 22 years in Operations, I have taken a position as the Cycle Manager in the Work Control department, in charge of scheduling long range maintenance for the station's two reactor plants. Over the years, I have been divorced, remarried and divorced again. I was given custody of Andrew and Vanessa when Bev and I were divorced. I am proud of the people they have become as adults. Vanessa still lives with me, but is looking to buy a house soon, thanks to Obama's first time home buyer tax credit. I also have my daughter from my second marriage living with me. Her name is Ellen and ...Expand for more
she is a freshman this year. She is an exceptional student, always getting straight As on her report card, but now she has found something that she can't do without - Marching Band. This is her second year, but first with the whole band camp experience and twice a week practices for her section (clarinets) and three times a week with the whole band together. She has adjusted well, enthusiasm overcoming the blisters and sore arms from standing at the ready position for long periods of time. Her school, Lakeshore high school, was the best band in the land last year (3rd time in 5 years). Ellen was in eighth grade and wasn't part of the whole experience, but the whole band is looking at keeping their ranking through all the long hot hours on the field this summer. Between band practices and work, I still find time to garden, brew home-made beer and do some wood working. Now I have another project that is occupying my time and resources. I am restoring a 1969 Dodge Superbee. Complete off-body restoration, back to the way it looked when it was delivered to the showroom 40 years ago. Ellen is totally into the car, but not into the grease under the finger nails part of it. Still, we have those all important parent/teenager talks about everything and nothing with her on a shop stool and me with a wrench in my hand. I still make it home to see my parents and my sister (Crystal, class of 1977) in Chillicothe at least a couple of times a year. I have committed to Ellen that I will retire when I am 55, so not long to go. I plan to move back to Chillicothe then. Ellen plans on attending Ohio State University after she graduates, with her major still up in the air. That will take me away from the rest of my kids and my 5 grand kids, but I will probably see them more then than I do now. Between all of our work schedules and the various kid functions, it is hard to see as much of each other as we would like.
