David's Story
Life
I went to U of MD after Churchill High school but only for a year before changing majors and going to Westminster conservatory to study music and become disillusioned. It was there that, whilst working in the music library to earn drug money and avoid meaningful labor, I had an epiphany; Singing classical music is really hard!
I just didn't have the pipes to match the genius of Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini,Verdi or the rest. So.... off to Boston to join a band and learn the traditional techniques of piano finishing. This was in the early '80s and the popular music scene in Boston was booming. I hooked up with Craig Weisbaum and played in bands there and worked at this great piano shop and generally had a ball.
I later moved back to the D.C. area to pursue a career in procrastination. This induced me to remain in music as a singer and guitar player and, in fact, go on the road with several bands over the next 15 years. I subsequently moved to L.A. where I played guitar in studio sessions, in clubs, and arenas both in the states and Japan. I had a fair amount of success in "the business".
But in '94, I moved back East in the middle of this to care for my dad who was dying of cancer. After that, I hadn't the heart or the interest to return to California and instead went into institutional Pharmacy services and became an account ma...Expand for more
nager for a national firm. Don't ever do this, no matter how low in the arc of your life you find yourself.
I kept at this occupation for 12 years and finally was "severanced" when the company was bought out by an even larger concern. I would have danced a jig but enjoyment of any kind was strictly forbidden on company time.
Before the ax fell, however, I bought a house in MA, a boat on which I could spend my free time and meager savings, and a workshop full of tools so that I could maintain my boat and re-model my house. During this time, I also met my wife Heidi, a school teacher and generally hot babe. We have been together for 9 years and in fact got married this past April.
Anyway, I took my generous severance package and, re-untied with my old friend Craig W., put together a corporate function band (hit-time.com) in the D.C. area to entertain hoards of the kind of drone I had once been. This has proven moderately successful and, together with solo singer-songwriter gigs (davidtelles.com), free-lance production design, script-writing, voice-over work and a lot of hyphens, I've managed to eke out a living without becoming bitter and cynical, despite the fact that life sucks!
I jest. Life is good. I'm currently exploring the possibilities of starting a small boat building shop here in New England. Anything to avoid a cubicle.
