David's Story
Workplace
After leaving college in 1973 I jumped around several jobs before starting work with the Department of Veteran Affairs in November 1977. I worked at the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan as a government purchasing agent. In January 1980 I went to Milwaukee, WI as a management trainee. I came back to Allen Park, Michigan as the head of the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (artificial limbs and home medical equipment department). I moved to the newly built medical center in Detroit, Michigan in 1994 eventually taking a "buy-out" in December 1999. I returned to college and obtained my teaching certificate but couldn't land a teaching position. I eventually wound up as the director of a rotating homeless shelter in southern Wayne County. of years before returning to veteran services. I worked for the University of Michigan assisting National Guard veterans. I finally wound up with the State of Michigan coordinating veteran services in the metropolitan Detroit area. I retired in March 2017.
Military
Enlisted in USMC in SEP 1969. Went to Parris Island, SC for boot camp, then on to Camp LeJeune (Camp Geiger), NC in NOV 69 for Advanced Infantry Training. JAN 1970 went to Camp Pendelton, CA and FEB 1970 to Camp Smedley D. Butler, Okinawa. Reported to Vietnam MAR 1970 and served with Golf Co., 2nd Bat. 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division at An Hoa, Vietnam. Wounded in action, JUL 1970 and was medevaced to Da Nang, Vietnam (3 days); Yokuska, Japan (7 days); and Philadelphia Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, PA (7 months). Eventually given full medical retirement due to disability in FEB 1971.
