David's Story
Life
Well, I grew up and got educated, started working for a living, married a woman who is too good for me and now we have a family. Took me a while but so far so good. Right now, I'm an English and Communications Instructor with the University College of the North (formerly Keewatin College) in Norway House, MB. Sometimes I write. Most times I don't. In-between I think (but rarely about writing). My wife is Elizabeth (a Cree teacher), my daughter is Robyn (age 11), and me - well, I'm still David.
Just an update: we lost our mother to leukemia in November, 2006. She lived a life with no regrets and passed away with dignity and respect. She will be missed by many but we are all richer through her experiences...
Cheers
School
Ahh... Morris Correctional, I mean... Collegiate Institute. Home to Adam Straszynski, the Beaver, Chem lab rubber stopper wars and if memory serves me correctly, that ugly old brown couch in the student lounge (which was moderately comfortable). I have less hair and more weight now, but basically I'm the same hyper juvenile I was back then. Only now I'm paid to be that way. Glad I attended, glad I graduated. Glad I'm gone. Miss a few people, but hey...

Workplace
Where to begin... the last few years I've been coordinating and teaching college and university level English and Communications courses full time (I'm a lecturer, NOT a professor... thank goodness), but I've also worked in adult education programming, counselling, crisis management and was the director of a group home for adults with mental illnesses for five years. I've done some freelance work in theatre and the media, but unless I owe you money, it's unlikely you've heard of me. At some point, I'll figure out what I want to be if I grow up but for now, I'm too busy to worry about such mundane things.
I've also become somewhat of a community activist - serving on the local community council for a third term now and fighting the Dept. of Northern Affairs to ensure semi-isolated towns like Norway House aren't neglected when budgets for roads, infrastructure and economic development plans are drafted. I also serve on our local health board so that when I'm old and grizzled (okay older and more grizzled) and years of neglect and self-abuse have caught up, I'll be in good hands.
I'm hoping that at some point in the near future, I can take a vacation - my last was to New York City in 2002 (eleven months after 9-11 - very interesting, to say the least). Maybe next year...
