David's Story

I am back in the US for three + years after spending 12 wonderful years in Wiesbaden Germany. We lived on a relatively quite street among vineyards just west of Frankfurt, along the Rhein River. A job with the US Army Corps of Engineers brought me there after retiring from the Army after 29 years combined reserve and active duty in 2002 as a Lieutenant Colonel. My job brought me to many places, especially Bavaria, managing design and construction projects in support of the soldiers and their families stationed in Europe. During my stay I got to deploy to Iraq for 7 months. This is important because as a soldier I never once deployed to a combat zone during hostilities. I have many stories to tell, left for another time. My wife of 43+ years Lourdes (Lu) accompanied me as well as my youngest Child, Elizabeth who started her schooling in Germany (Heidelberg) when I was in uniform and finished all four years of HS there in Wiesbaden when I returned as a civilian. Liz is now married with 2 of our Grandchildren and lives close to us here in Georgia as her husband Tyler, an Army nurse, is in Germany (Kaiserslautern) (moved in December 2017) prior to a potential deployment. We have an other child, David A who is married, living and working in Canton, OH. He is a Graduate, as is his wife Jill, of Georgia Southern U. They have our other Grandchild, a son Bryce who is 4 years old. They are expecting a second child in Nov 18. After graduation from AWHS I attended Lafayette College, Easton, PA in civil engineering, worked construction on the power plant in East Haven, did a short tour in the Army in Virginia,...Expand for more
met my wife and married, worked in Bucks County PA for US Steel, and re-entered the Army as a Captain from the reserves. It was the Army that brought us across the nation with stops in Minnesota, Atlanta (6 years the first time), Germany, Washington state, and a return to Atlanta before retiring. Along the way my duties gave me an opportunity to see a number of counties in the middle east and Africa including Egypt, Kenya, Somalia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman among others. Living in Europe allowed us to explore most of the continent. Including my deployment, I now have over 60 countries and islands, though only 4 continents. I need only 3 states to go to visit all of our country as well. I never got to the place of my grandparents' birth - Slovakia, and the place of my wife's birth - the Philippines, but we are saving those for after our final retirement which should come soon. I now work for the Federal Government and Department of Defense supporting schools on military bases along the east cost and Puerto Rico. My duties bring me to West Point NY, Quantico VA, and Puerto Rico. I am waiting until April 2020 to retire in order to see my new schools to near completion and to save money to travel the world - Australia, New Zealand, China, the Philippines, and those few places in Europe we missed. We are looking forward to continue living our dreams. I miss home, though I would not give up the memories and adventures that my gypsy life afforded me. And living in Georgia as a Damn Yankee has not been so bad after all. Certainly less expensive. Best of Luck and good health to all that read my story.
