David's Story

I was born and raised in a small town in the midwest. I have 2 sisters and 3 brothers. I'm the youngest. My Mom was very good to me, but my Dad was pretty much non-existent by the time I came along. All in all though, I had a pretty cool childhood, except that my Dad used to choose to travel, with his family in tow, every few years for his job, and as a result, I never got to stick around one place for as long as I may have liked...... but whatever...... Life's not perfect, and neither am I, so I guess that makes us a great couple. I had already lived in a few different states by the time I ended up living in Phoenix, and going to Shea Middle School and SM high school. I attended all 4 years at SM, So I consider myself lucky that at least I got the chance to go to the same high school 4 years in a row. I remember being pretty socially intimidated by the whole "High School" thing coming in as a Freshman at SM. I put up my physcological / social guard and somehow I managed to survive. I went on to graduate by the skin of my teeth. Ah....... those were the days....... Not only did I have all my teeth back then, but my life's work as a textbook underachiever was well underway.......... What an accomplishment. :~) Needless to say as soon as I graduated and was 18, I was kicked out of my house. Ready or not, here we go now....... I ended up falling out my nest made of ice and landing in Southern California which is where I have been ...Expand for more
ever since. I was on my own now, no one was around to tell me to move here and there anymore, so I just decided to stay put. I have been EXTREMELY fortunate since then. I suppose I could complain about some stuff here and there, but I'm not going to, because there are just simply too many good things / great opportunities that life in the USA has given me. Skateboarding was definitely the most influential sport in my life, although I appreciate almost all sports. I learned how to skateboard on inclined / banked surfaces at Shadow Mountain High School. Do Ya'll remember that stupid little concrete drainage ditch just outside the awesome tennis courts at SM? Well...... that was one of the most amazing little skate spots in my personal skate history, and believe me........ I have skated quite a few amazing "skate spots" in my skateboarding career, and that stupid little drainage ditch was hands down one of the best. Anybody who ever seriously got into riding "THE PAVED WAVE" as it was known, knows that having that spot so "local" and lit up all summer night long with professional, stadium quality, school supplied, overhead lighting till almost midnight, 7 nights a week, 52 weeks a year, will never forget how cool that place was. The PAVED WAVE was a real gift. So I guess since THE PAVED WAVE was part of Shadow Mountain High School, then my 4 years at Shadow Mountain were a real gift as well. No matter what I may or may not say. :~)
