David's Story

Life I moved out to the San Fernando Valley in October of 1977 to study the trumpet with well-known lead trumpeter Carlton MacBeth. Through him I got a chance to know the music scene very well, study composition, and through my teacher, meet people like the Condoli brothers, Doc, Snooky Young, Chuck Findly, Ollie Mitchell, Bobby Troup, Bill Holman, etc. One highlight was a birthday party for the legendary trumpet-maker Domonique Colliccio in 1979, a few months before he died. At our table sat the Tonight Show trumpet section, a trumpeter from the LA Phil, and Pete Condoli. Did they talk music? No - the Rams. I've been married for 24 years to a wonderful wife and have a couple of Lab Retrievers. I have no kids. I work in engineering and have a 4-day work week. I'm fortunate to have paid off my house a few years ago. I'm active in my church congregation as a minister, teacher and song-leader. Our favorite vacation is traveling up the coast to the Carmel (I'm positive it's the lost Garden of Eden) with stops in Ohai, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Solvang, and Cambria. We camp on the beach or in the mountains a few times a year too. In the winter we like to go to Big Bear to get a snow-fix. For other recreation we make regular visits to used-book and antique stores. Whatever city or state we travel to, all the used-book stores and antique stores in that vicinity get a visit from us. We also like to dine out. I love going to any place owned by Wolfgang Puck. Many know that I've been a bowler most of my life. I still bowl in leagues and attend a few tournaments every year. Occasionally I go to the ABC National, especially when it's in Reno, which is relatively easy for me to get to. I've been an avid Laker fan for as long as I've lived out here. It's looking good again this year! I attend a few Dodger and Angel games each year and listen to the Sox and Cubs through MLB.com. It was great to see the Sox win it all a couple years ago since I'm a long-time fan. I attend ...Expand for more
the LA Philharmonic as much as I can. Over the years I've watched it grow from an excellent orchestra to one of the world's finest. Our new Disney Hall is the talk of the arts world and for good reason; it has a sound that's beyond belief. We also had a great (and hip) conductor in Eka Peka Solonen. I saw his (at 25 years old) first few performances our here in 1984 and could tell immediately that he was going to be a great conductor. I've been able to enjoy him with the LA Phil for over a decade. This year we started a new era with the young genious Gustavo Dudamel. I hurt my mouth a while back and from then on haven't been able to get much of a sound out of the trumpet, so I took up the piano. I try to get in an hour or two of practice a day. I just finished memorizing Beethoven's "Pathetique." I can't play it very smoothly, but still, I can hack through it and that feels like an accomplishment. I've also been working on some sonatas of Hayden and Mozart, Bach's "Two and Three-part Inventions", and Copin's Noctourns. Though I'm not real pianist, and have a broken thumb on my right hand, I'm having a ball learning the music. When I occasionally play something right, which isn't often, I get up from the piano-bench break into a tap-dance. You probably heard about our big earthquake in January, 1994. Our house is almost on the center of it. It was quite a wild experience and we had some damage to our property. I've been coming back to Wayne's World, I mean Aurora, every year at Christmas since I moved out here. The change is hard to believe. (I remember Oswego as a little village.) I keep up with the "happenings" through the Beacon News on the net. My favorite thing about living in LA? - Probably that I can sit out on my patio all night and hardly ever get stung by a mosquito. People always wonder how much money others make so I'll let you in on my financial status. I just started on my second million. I gave up on my first and decided to start on my second.
