[Estelle Jussim on the 19th century Cult of the Beautiful.]
"I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us. If the book we’re reading doesn’t wake us up with blow on the head, what are we reading it for? So that it will make us happy, you write? Good Lord, we should be happy precisely if we had no books, and the kind of books that make us happy are the kind we could write ourselves if we had to. But we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us." [From a letter by Franz Kafka to Oskar Pollak...Expand for more

More about David:""To prefer that which is in a book to the experience offered by real life, because the book is exciting or romantic or astounding, whereas real life can be dreary and unremarkable."
BURKAM from urbandictionary.com
I love milk, coffee, wine, scotch, picnics, candle light, pocket watches, fountain pens, cemeteries, antiques, old books, bookends, bookplates, romance, letter writing, sitting by the fire, my dog, the Pre-Raphaelites, garden statues, and the colors green and purple.
An unashamed bibliophile, my passion and collection spill over into every room of my house: old books with personal histories, bumped corners, mysterious inscriptions, and curious bookplates. And when I'm lucky, tucked between the pages: a faded flower, a calling card, or a scrap of ribbon.
I also collect tarot decks, Victorian ephemera, Roycroft and Mosher and Wake-Brook House Press, vintage photographs, and books about early spiritualism and mediums.
Despite my 19th century tendencies, I watch way too much TV. Tivo is very confused when it tries to figure out what I like to watch.
My netflix queue has over 250 movies (and I've rated nearly 1500). Netflix is similarly confused about what to recommend.".
