David's Story

Note: David passed away of lung cancer on June 15, 2009. He had written the below in 2007, I think). Life Due to my Father's work, we moved from Allen Park, MI to St. Joseph, MI and then to Glenwood Springs, CO. Leaving Allen Park was the hardest but then life became more of an adventure. My Father was the original business manager for Colorado Mountain College. As a result, I was there for the groundbreaking, I was the first student enrolled and I was in the first graduating class. Pretty eclectic group there at that time. I left Colorado and lived in Key West, FL for a short time and then on to Miami, FL. I got into the encyclopedia business (door-to-door) and moved quickly into management. That job no longer exists, but it was great fun and the money was massive! Livin' large in those days. From Miami I went to Jacksonville, FL for a while and then on to Charleston, SC, where several members of my family still live. I worked there as a youth counselor and psychometrist for the State and then was hired to start and run a halfway house for men getting out of prison. Very interesting, and intense, work. In Charleston I was very active in the volunteer community and was on the Board for most of the charitable organizations. While there I also signed on as a staff member for the National Center for Voluntary Action. That was great because of the training and the travel. The Georgia Governor's office of volunteer services got my resume from the National Center and brought me to Atlanta. At the same time I married my first wife and her three cute little kids. Working for government was no longer my cup of tea. I started a nutritional counseling business (which I still do part-time) and then moved into pharmaceutical sales. Great job. I did short stints selling medic...Expand for more
al computers and then wholesaleing coffee machines for Bunn. Went back and sold books for about six months (building back my reserves) and then got into the insurance business. Along the way, we had two more children, a boy and a girl. The insurance business has been good to me. I've started 4 agencies over the years and merged my most recent agency into a much larger agency about 18 months ago. I anticipate taking that operation over in the next 2-3 years. I'm licensed to sell life & health, property & casualty insurance and also securities. I'm also a Certified Insurance Counselor. Children have all survived growing up with me. My oldest daughter head's up workmen's compensation engineering for a large insurance company; next daughter has worked as a social worker all of her life; oldest son was an olympic gymnast, then a very successful pharmaceutical salesman and is now selling implantable electronic devices (like pacemakers). The next daughter (I'm her birth father-vs step-dad to the others) is now working for the pharmaceutical research company where my wife is a senior executive. Youngest son is in the real estate business and doing well. Now, my wife and I work long hours, 6-7 days a week, and still squeeze in season tickets for two broadway programs and the ballet, she is active with an adult women's sorority, and we both are members of a gourmet group. I also sing with the Gwinnett Choral Guild. Family is still a priority and I try to see kids and brothers & sisters as often as possible. Of course, grandkids are lots of fun. We have 7 now. The two youngest are the only ones who are close enough to see regularly (my youngest son's). Two cute little girls. After they've been around awhile, though, you begin to understand why we have children when we are young. Whew!
