David's Story
I've not run into too many classmates over the years because once I left for college, I never returned to Wilmington. I did run into another fellow classmate in New York a number of years ago and found we have some mutual friends/colleagues -- Larry Katzenstein, who was working at Consumer Reports at the time. And, I communicated with Jim Pooley, who is the "real deal" in the world of patent law.
After earning an undergraduate degree in Math & Physics (wanted to be an astronaut, but the back surgery I had immediately after graduating from MPHS disqualified me), I headed to grad school where I earned an MS in Computer & Information Science at The Ohio State University.
Career-wise, I was an executive at CompuServe for 22 years ('74-'96) where we pioneered "online" services (yes there was life online before the Internet). Since '96, I've been a consultant -- first helping a few startups including eDrive (NYC), Mainspring (Cambridge, MA) and Roadrunner LLC (Time Warner high-speed internet), then as a patent litigation consultant (expert witness). I have also been on advisory boards and boards of directors for both public and private companies and organizations and am currently Chairman of Nuvocom Incorporated.
Married my college sweetheart, Lynne Cramer, and have 3 grown children -- David (Honolulu, HI), Bob (Austin, TX) and Sarah (Chapel Hill, NC) and a granddaughter, Allison (Washington, DC).
Have traveled the world for work, for fun and to "give back." Most recently to Tuscany, Provence, Ireland, Japan, Jordan, Israel, Paris, London, Guinea, The Gambia, Philippines, Mexico, N...Expand for more
etherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, Aruba, Jamaica, and of course California, Hawaii, Texas, Florida, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, DC. Not to mention frequent trips to our beach house at Sunset Beach, NC. Upcoming trips to San Francisco, Napa and Mendocino, New York, Scotland, Berlin, Prague, Amsterdam, Yorkshire & cruising the Elbe.
Still playing competitve(?) tennis at Deer Valley Racquet Club (Boone, NC) and in USTA Leagues -- even after 2 back surgeries and 2 hip replacements. Love the beach, the mountains, hiking and kayaking. Had to give up soccer at age 52 after surgery for prostate cancer.
Professional stories of interest: had dinner with Melinda French on the evening of her first date with her eventual husband (Bill Gates); acquired MicroSolutions Inc. (Dallas) and had a management contract with the owner, who took the $3.5 million we paid for his business, started a new company and sold it to Yahoo! in an all-stock deal valued at $3.6 BILLION -- that business owner now owns the Dallas Mavericks (Mark Cuban); Steve Jobs personally introduced me to "the Internet" in 1985 (yes, eighty-five) when he left Apple to start NeXT Computer Co. -- he was using TCP/IP for networking (because it was free). I was fortunate to have met many of those who helped shape the personal and online computing industry we know today. My current clients as an expert witness include: Amazon, AOL, Apple, eBay, Google, Microsoft and others. When it's not fun any more, maybe I'll retire.
That's way more than anyone wants to know....
