David's Story
After graduating from U.Maine-Orono with Master's degrees in Education, Diane and I taught in Old Town and Rockland, Maine (1967-1972; and 1972-1979 respectively). I served as assistant high school principal and then principal at Rockland for the 1977-1978 school year. For the 30 years from July, 1979 to June, 2009 we lived and worked abroad--Diane as a teacher (N to 3) and reading/resource specialist (N to 12); while I taught English and history (grades 5-12) and served as principal (6-12), counselor (6-12), business manager (N-9) and school head (N-12). We lived and worked in Cairo, Egypt (1979-1981); Yanbu, Saidi Arabia (1981-1987); Abidjan, The Ivory Coast, West Africa (1987- 1991); Beijing, China (1991-1996); Burapha, Thailand (1996-1997); and Phnom Penh, Cambodia (1997-2009). After heading international schools in Africa and China, I became the founder and head of Northbridge International School Cambodia (1997-2009). Diane retired in June 2006, and she passed away after a brave and hard-fought battle with breast cancer in April 2009. I retired for good in June 2009; and now I am continuing to re-establish my existence without Diane--my soul mate of 42 years.
Currently I am enjoying Asheville--"Beer City USA"--and the mountains of western North Carolina as my home base, while traveling the world and enjoying life.
Travel Overview: I took a 58 day road trip from Nobleboro, Maine to San Francisco, California and back in the fall of 2012. I drove my Lexus Rx350 over the ...Expand for more
2,400 mile stretch of RT 66, passed through 20 plus states, stopped at numerous memorable sites and national parks, and visited some relatives and old friends along the way. While the trip provided too many exciting highlights to list here, a few of my favorites include: the "Sky Deck Ledge" at Willis Tower, Chicago; the "Balloon Fest" in Albuquerque, NM; Monument valley, UT; of course the wine country of Northern California; and getting snowed in during a blizzard in West Yellowstone, ID.
My recent adventures include fishing trips to Yellowstone National Park in July 2013 and to God's Lake in northern Manitoba, Canada in August. In between these trips, I had a great time visiting with my old Brewer High classmates at our July Reunion!
In December 2013 I returned from a month long trip to SE Asia, passing through Thailand, Cambodia and North Vietnam. Specifically I spent time in Pattaya and Bangkok; Phnom Penh, Bokor Mt., Kampot, Kep and Siem Reap (Angkor Wat); and Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa. I revisited places where I had lived, stayed with old friends in Thailand and Cambodia and also visited many new places and made a lot of new friends.
On August 22, 2014, I had to cut my month-long trip to Europe short because I fractured my right tibia in a fall in Copenhagen. But I did manage to have a great time before the accident in Ireland, Denmark and Iceland.
