David's Story
From IHS to Cornell. Joined a fraternity. Switched majors from math to physics. Continued on to graduate school at Cornell in experimental physics at the Cornell synchrotron. Took a job as a post-doc at Fermilab (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory) in 1978. Been there ever since, doing experiments, building particle accelerators, 10 years doing mostly management, now I'm managing at a lower level and get to be closer to actually building stuff. It's mostly computer work and meetings, so I could work from home while access was restricted. Starting phased retirement (down to 4 days per week) in April 2023.
Married in 1976 and still happily together. In the same house since 1979. Wife Pauline is an MD with a solo family medicine practice starting in 1982. We sold the office condo in 2017 and she moved to a spare room in a small immediate care facility. Telemedicine since March 2020 and probably won't go back to an office. We have two daughters. #1 interrupted her undergraduate career to manage stores for Abercrombie & Fitch for 7 years, quit ...Expand for more
to go back to school and earned an AA. Promotions manager for one in a small chain of restaurants in SoCal. After working several years in Denver for the Girl Scouts and odd jobs, she has started a de-cluttering and organizing business. #2 earned a Cornell Hotel School degree ('06), caught up on her science classes, graduated med school (DO) 2013. Did a family medicine residency in SoCal. Now with the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage. Got married on the Matanuska Glacier in 2019.
Outside of work: 16 years leading the Warrenville Park District through a period of explosive growth, hence the ball field in the photo named after me when I retired from the Board of Commissioners. Active in contra dancing and other folk activities. Served 7 years on the Board of Directors of the local Girl Scout council.
My parents moved into Kendal at Ithaca when it opened in January 1996. My mother died in 2002, my father in 2013. We used to get back to Ithaca several times a year, but the draw isn't as strong now, just high school and college reunions.
