David's Story
Life
Raised on old farm overlooking the Tomhannock Reservoir, I got an A.A.S. in Electrical Technology from Hudson Valley Technical Institute in Troy, now HVCC in East Greenbush. I was briefly in the US Navy, and worked as a tester for the Technical Materiel Corp in Mamaroneck. Captured wife Carolyn and degree in Physics while at Hartwick College in Oneonta. I now have a daughter and three grandsons, and am retired from work as a clerk for Ulster County, a technical specialist in Physics and Geology at SUNY New Paltz, and teaching at Liberty High School and Eldred Central. Life is good. I worked part-time as a secretary for the Latham Community Baptist Church, and devoting some time to volunteer work for the church until about June of 2006. Carolyn has retired now, and devotes some hours each day to caring for 2 of our 3 grandchildren, who live less than a mile away. I now also have a license as an amateur radio operator (KC2LVD). I am a member of Veterans for Peace, the Troy Amateur Radio Association, The Arbor Day Foundation, and the Interfaith Alliance. A few years ago, I spent quite a bit of time working with the Peace Alliance to make the U.S. Department of Peace a reality. A heart attack and a short bout with colon cancer slowed me down to some degree.
Workplace
My first job after college was a job done totally without supervision, and, as excited as I was each day to go through it, I realize now that it was a mistake. It was a mistake that resu...Expand for more
lted in the lack of teaching of science to hundreds of high-school students in Liberty, New York. Though I selfishly resented my forced resignation for many years after that job ended, I now see it as being the greater good for the greater number.
My second teaching job, in Eldred, may actually have been my best. The kids were well-behaved, interested, and almost taught themselves. They made work a joy.
As a Technical Specialist in Physics at SUNY New Paltz, I again was my own boss, and I knew what I was doing.
I may have more to say about my years with Ulster County at a later time. Right now, I think of it as having the most to do with people (I worked in Personnel), including co-workers, supervisors and department heads.
Retirement Years
I retired from full-time work, on a state pension, soon after I turned 55. I moved from New Paltz, NY, where we had lived for about 30 years, to a house in Latham, NY, near where we live now. For a few years I worked as a part-time secretary at our local church.
My wife is now retired, as well, and life is good. I have had colon cancer, a heart attack, and just recently sold the major part of the farm that I was raised on. Things are looking up. In July 2011 my wife and I got together with all of my relatives who ever knew the farm, even as children. Their families were there, too, and we all had fun constructing a complete, up-to-the-minute geneology, where many of the additions were people I had just met.
