David's Story
Life
I met my wife in grad school. She was living about 2 hours away, and visiting her best friend who was a colleague of mine, and we hit it off from the first handshake.
Our first couple of years were an exercise in dealing with distance, 120 miles apart, then 300 miles apart, then 650 miles apart. Around the time I was finishing grad school, she was going back to grad school and we managed to get the distance down to 0 miles. 0 miles is better than 650.
We spend our usually non-existent free time playing with our 3 cats, grilling, and waiting for the next Harry Potter book.
School
I honestly don't remember. I must be blocking it all out.
College
UTSA:
I remember sitting around playing guitar on the stone benches in the Sombrilla, going to clubs to hear Cactus Smack play, insane E&M homeworks with Dr. Nash (Nothing like using Jackson for a text in an undergraduate physics class!), and the pump for the ...Expand for more
dye laser that leaked Rhodamine 6G like crazy.
RPI:
Fun stuff - Dome Inspections, Doom, Holmes and Watson, the Parting Glass, Eammon's, taking over the bio lab next door with nerf guns.
Classwork - Jackson as a grad student wasn't much better. Howie, English Mark, Jeff, Ramya, and I solving problems til 2 every morning.
Apartment - living above the Puritan Tap Room, with my appliances bouncing in time to the music til 3 in the morning, so glad I got out of there.
Workplace
The really short version... Physics degree at UTSA, Physics Ph.D. at RPI, postdoc in educational technology at the Shodor Education Foundation, assistant professor of computational mathematics at Kean University.
Mostly what I am doing these days is developing a digital library of educational materials that show students how computers are used to make calculations in science and training future New Jersey math and science teachers.
