David's Story
Life
Happily married to the former Christy Callaghan. Her grandfather started Callaghan's Irish Social Club in Mobile in 1946, and it is the oldest continuing operating bar in Mobile. It is located in the Oakleigh District, and is conviently 2 doors down from my our house (60 steps from our fromt door to the barstool; 75 on a particularly good night).
Our house is 151 years old, and we have been restoring it what it would have looked like when it was originally built.
We have basically gutted the entire house and restored walls, ceilings, floors, electrical, and plumming. Needless to say, it takes up a lot of our time, but it has so been worth it.
Music has continued to play a big part in my life, most of it centering around the Who. In 1998, Dave England and I road tripped all the way to Bethel, NY to Yasgur's Farm; i.e. the original Woodstock festivasl sight to catch Pete Townshend and other artists playing. Hippie heaven!
I knew Christy was the women I should marry when we attended a concert at the Saenger Theater in Mobile where John Entwistle (the Who's bassist) was playing. I had a Who tour program from 1997 I was going to try and get him to sign. We waited three hours for him to come out; he finally did around 1:00 AM. Christy is a high school teacher, and had to be at work in about 5 hours. But, she wasn't going to let me leave empty handed, and did not complain once. So, he walks over to us, and says hello, and asks would I like for him to sign the tour book. All I said to him was, "Uh, yes, please". He asked my name, and I forgot it. I was completely speechless that he was standing right next to me, and nothing was being produced mentally but brain farts. Christy jumped right in and told him my name, and that I was the Who's biggest fan, and I had been to every Who show since 1989, and I had all of the Who's albums, and all of his solo albums, etc. She totally had my back, and was even polite enough to thank him for signing the tour book; I think I had fainted by this point. We were engaged six months later. Six months before we got married, on the anniversary of 911, we were on a plane to NYC to see the Who.
I also volunteer for Bayfest, Mobile's annual music festival.
Chrsity is an artist, and designed the festival's 10th anniversary official poster.
So, I have found the women of my dreams, still enjoy a good beer, and play the music loud. Christy does not mind the latter two, so if we met again today, you would say I have not changed that much.
School
I will never forget the entire school being assembled in the gym after a school Mass, and Bill McAtee getting up behind the podium saying he had a very unpleasant ammouncemet to make. He could not believe something like this had happened at McGill, a school founded on Christian-Catholic principles. The person or persons involved in what he was about to relay to the students and faculity were beyond redemption. You thought, "My God, someone has killed somebody". Then he announce...Expand for more
d that someone had stolen a lunch. I think everyone was laughing. Then he siad if your laughing now, you will feel lile a jackass in a second. The lunch was laced with rat poison. Instant silenece! Aparently, some fols had been messing with a freshman, taking his lunch from him everyday, and he decided the next one they took would be the last one.
No one was hurt as the guilty parties came forth. But, it was funny as hell up until the rat poison part, right?
I would aslo like to say here that I was a real ass and a real jerk to a lot of people we went to school with. I had things at home and in my personal life I was trying to deal with, and not doing a good job of it. Not trying to use that as an excuse, but the insecurities in my own life were taken out on some other people. Without naming names since these people know who they are, I would like to offer my humblist appology. I had no right to treat you in such a mean and cold manner. Should we ever see each other again, you will get this apology to your face, and I hope you are a bigger person than I was, and can find it in your heart to forgive me.
College
I turned college into a 12 year career, changing majors three times.
Too much fun. I remember skipping a final to catch the Rolling Stones in Birmingham. I failed the course outright because of it, but I figured the class would be there to take next semester, but anyone of the Stones, especially Keith Richards could drop dead at any second.
I attended 3 colleges. I went my first 2 years to Spring Hill College. I was a DJ on the now defunct student radio station WTOH, which broadcast at an impressive 10 watts (most commercial stations are 100,000 watts). Needless to say the FCC wasn't listening since you could only pick us up for about a mile radius around campus. Therefore, "liberties" were taken with the content played, such as George Carlin's 7 words you can't say on TV, etc. Plus, since the shift was from midnight until 2 AM, the cooler of beer was always outside in the car, waiting for the right time to play Alice's Restaurant for an extended break. Fn times, as Joe Spinnato, my partner in crime, can attest to.
I left Spring Hill to attend the University of Alabama as I had been in Mobile for my entire life at that time. Really good times, but not much effort put out accademically on my part. I found out that the Unviersity did not offer a degree in barhopping and partying after I has put almost 3 years into it, and was told my presence was no longer required.
I returned to Mobile and worked for 2 years before starting at the University of South Alabama. Now paying for school myself for the most part, I tended to take it a little more seriously. No more wild times here as I was working full time for a law firm and taking night classes. But, I graduted with a degree in business administration in four years. Fianlly had to quit putting "student" on my tax return, which was kind of a shock. Everyone grows up eventually, sort of...
