David's Story
Well, I attended Gardendale Elementay then went to Phillips High for a couple of years, then to Mortimer Jordan. During this later transistion, I nearly dropped out of school. But, with some teacher and friend support, I finally decided to buckle down and graduate. I took a heavy load and completed three years plus of work in two. I was taking three English classes at once. I managed to get a job driving the Gardendale bus part time for a little extra money and I taught a ninth grade Alabama History class, in my spare time. They failed to get a teacher for the class and I was a senior taking a ninth grade class so I volunteered to cover for a teacher. I did well in there. Made a good grade.
I graduated in '61, got married and moved to Decatur, AL. We had a daughter who was born with birth defects and died after 9 months. After a few years I quit my job, nearly on welfare, and took a job with the Morgan County Health Department as an inspector. then my education really began

udent and earned my Associate in Science Degree. I then did the same at Athens College and graduated in three semesters by working full time and taking as many classes as they would allow. Here, I earned a B. S. with a double major in Biology and psychology.
Afterwards, the State of Alabama gave me education leave with pay and benefits to earn my Master of Public Health Degree at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicene. I earned it in nine months in New Orleans beginning in September 1975 and graduated May 1, 1976.
The State then placed me as the Environmental Health Director over 12 North Alabama Counties. Previously, they had used me all over the State as an inspector and consultant.
In 1981, I devorced from my wife (Jeanette Arendale, Norwood) and a year later remarried a girl ( Sherrie McArthur, from Dover Delaware, with two young daughters. She taught Elementary then library. We stuck.
I would love to hear from some of my old friends and classmates. This covers over 60 years!
