David's Story
Life
Being the son of a career naval officer, we moved quite often. In some ways, the hardest move came during the summer before my senior year in high school. I had been a student at Pine Junior High School and Los Alamitos High School for almost four years, the longest I had ever lived anywhere. Fortunately for me, the new school in Gaithersburg, MD was incredible. I made lots of good friends and had some very memorable experiences. I had planned on attending the US Naval Academy after graduating from high school but did not get an appointment. I ended up going to Montgomery College Rockville for a semester where I lettered in tennis and was selected All-Maryland JUCO. I transferred to San Diego State for the next semester. While there, I played on their lacrosse team and joined Sigma Nu Fraternity. During that semester, I got notification that I had been appointed to the Naval Academy. After much debate, I decided to follow my dreams to Annapolis. I didn't make the tennis or lacrosse teams there so I concentrated on singing in the Glee Club. I graduated in 1981 with a degree in Physical Science and went to flight school. My career spanned 18 years flying as a Naval Flight Officer in the...Expand for more
P-3 Orion aircraft. Additional tours included staff jobs in San Diego, San Jose and on the CNO's staff as well as operational tours in VP-6 and VP-47. I spent a three year tour at the Naval Academy as an Assistant Professor of Leadership and as the 5th Company Officer. It was during this time that I met my wife, Sheryl. She was a student at Hood College who sang in their chorus and played on their tennis team so we had a lot in common. She also was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School with the Class of '84. We got married shortly after her college graduation in 1988. Our daughter, Christine, was born in San Jose, CA on July 30, 1993 (exactly our 5th anniversary!). We moved a month later to Hawaii for my second squadron tour. In 1998 I retired from the Navy and began my second career as a Merrill Lynch Financial Advisor. We moved to Orange Park, FL (a suburb of Jacksonville) and have loved living here. I'm a partner in the Bhide-Phillips Group. We're a Private Wealth Management Team working with high net worth investors across the country. Life is wonderful and I've been very blessed through all of my adventures. Hope life has treated all of my friends from Los Al and G-burg equally well.
