David's Story

After leaving Ocean City High School, I moved to Port Salerno Florida for a year of college at Indian River College. I got a job pumping gas and changing tires and eventually got a job at a land surveying company drafting plans for them. The funny thing was, soon after I started working there the company was bought by an Architectural Firm based in Ocean City N.J. The same Architectural firm I had tried to work for while I was still living in N.J. Small world. One weekend I went to a local High School Dance with a friend. The band had nine members and was called the Funky JBs. They were quite good. However, they had no guitarist and I thought it would be fun to be part of their band. A couple of weeks later, I was playing my guitar in the living room of a friend and a black guy comes up to the window and peers in. He stood there for a bit, listening I guessed, and then disappeared. Shortly there was a knock on the door and we let this guy in. He asked if I would like to try out for their band and I said "sure!". Tur...Expand for more
ns out he was the Sax player for the band I had seen at the dance. He was also the music teacher at that same High School. He gave me a Cool And The Gang album and asked me to learn a couple of songs and meet him at their rehearsal spot. Long story short, I got the position of guitar player and for about 8 months played almost weekly with the band at gigs from Ft. Lauderdale to Ft. Pierce. There I was, a funky white boy playing with guys who really were funky. It was a great experience. I actually learned to dance a bit, and I became very comfortable being the only white guy in a black universe. I met a lot of great people and loved my time with the band. I ended my time with the Funky JBs when I moved back to N.J. to continue my education. This move was motivated by a love interest who was a Senior at Ocean City High. Currently, I am living with my wife and son in Clearwater FL. I have two daughters, one of who lives in Clearwater with her four children. The other lives in Colorado with her husband, No children yet.
