Richard's Story
Life
After High School. I went into the Navy from 1971 until 1975. I then went into the Reserves for two years. I lived in Pomona at that time. I moved back to Bassett in 1978 and got married. I worked for Nelson Pontiac in El Monte until 1980. I then went to work for RC Cola from 1980 until 1984. In Oct. 1984 we moved to Altus, Oklahoma. From 1984 until 1994 I worked for Wilmes Superstore as a car and truck machinac, and wrecker driver and road side service. I became disable in Dec. 1994. I became a home dad. I have been married for 23 years to Debbie. We have 3 children. Jeremy 27 years old, Michele who is 23 years old, and Ricky who is 20 years old. We have 2 grandchildren. Lorayna and Dylan who is 4 and 2. I have helped raise Lorayna so I am closer to her but love both of them the same. In 2000 we move to Apahce, Oklahoma to be closer to my wife's work. She is incharge of sercurity for Bar-S Foods in Lawton, Ok. We now live a few blocks away from a lake here. I am injoying life of retirement now. My wife has a petting zoo that I help her take care of. The kids love it. I would love to hear from anyone from Bassett.

INT SHIP YARD FOR A REFIT.THE HOME PORT WAS ALAMEDA- BY OAKLAND - WENT TO VEIT-NAM ON APIRL 1972 AND DIDN'T RETURN UNTIL MARCH 73. WHAT A TRIP.AT THAT TIME WE GOT THE PRES.UNIT CIT. FOR MINNING EVERYTHING FROM HANOI TO THE DMZ. WE ALSO WAS THE FIRST SHIP TO HAVE THE FIRST MIG SHOOT DOWN AND THE LAST MIG SHOOT DOWN.HAVE A CRASH ON THE FLIGHT DECK AND HAD TO SEND 13 MEN TO DANAG , TO THE HOSP.THERE.WE ALSO HAD A MIG FOLLOW A CRIPPLED PLANE BACK TO THE SHIP, ONE WAS SHOT DOWN THE OTHER DISSAPERED SOME WHERE. DURING THE DEC 72 BOMBING,ONE OF OUR A-6'S SUPPOSEILY DROPPED A BOMB OR 2 ONTHE FRENCH EMBASSY IN DOWNTOWN HANOI. GOT TO BECOME A SHELLBACK AND HAD THE LAST BOB HOPE SHOW ON THE SHIP, IN SINGAPORE. THEN IN SEPT 73WE WENT TO JAPAN AS A NEW HOME PORT. I WORKED IN #1 ENGINE ROOM , AND OUTSIDE OF HAIWAI ,2 ENGINE ROOMS WENT OFF LINE, WHAT A MESS. WE WERE WORKING 6/6 I HAD TO GO TO THE PUMP RM AND WRAP IT UP AND GET IT BACK ON LINE, TOOK 4 HOURS , I ONLY HAD 1 HOUR SLEEP , THEN HAD TO STAND ANOTHER6 HOUR WATCH. I LEFT MIDWAY ON AUG. 74 TO GO TO SAN DEIGO. I DIDN'T LIKE THE 45 DAYS ON THE LINE, BUT PI , HONG KONG, SINGAPORE WAS WORTH IT. JAPAN WAS SO/SO. I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR SOME TIME FOR THE GUYS I SERVED WITH, PREETY MUCH ANYBODY IN EGINEERING. SO IF YOU FIND THIS LET ME KNOW. BY THE WAY MIDWAY IS HEADING FOR SAN DEIGO TO BE A MUESUM, IN 2004.
