Dawn's Story
Life
I was born in Freeland, Michigan and
attended Freeland Elem. until 1968
when my parents moved our family to
Rose City, Michigan. They opened a
campgrounds for motorcycles, dune
buggies and snowmobiles.
I attended Rose City Elem, and Jr.
High. Ogemaw Heights a new high
school opened in 1969 and it
combined Rose City and West
Branch Jr. High Schools. I graduated
in 1976. Wow! Over 30 years ago!
I attended St. Joseph's College in
Rensselaer, Ind. for one year and
then transferred to Michigan State
University. I played basketball and
ran track at St. Joe's and played
basketball at MSU.
I married Gary Brettrager (Saginaw, MI) in 1981. In December of that year we moved to Palmer,Alaska and have been here ever since. We have
2 children: Sarah, age 21, Kalli, age 18. Sarah is a student at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and is currently enrolled in an internship in Nuclear Medicine Technology at U of M. Kalli is a freshman at Humboldt State University in Northern California and studying Marine Biology.
I currently teach at Colony High School and I'm finishing my 26th year of teaching in the Matanusk-Susitna Borough School District. I teach
Health and Physical Education to mostly freshman at Colony High School.
I have coached basketball, volleyball, cross country running, swimmi...Expand for more
ng and even cheerleading. I plan to retire in 2012, if not before.
We live in a log home on 15 acres. After having a log home builder erect the logs, we finished the rest of the home ourselves. They are large full-round Alaskan Spruce.
We've had several Michigan visitors, including OHHS staff - Jamie Richards, Linda Delemeester, Peg Runyan (who didn't even stop to say "Hi"), Sharon Reiger. Also, Jan (Gildner) and Mark Wilbur, Todd Wilbur, and friends and relatives from the Saginaw area.
My mom, "Ma Bryant" and my dad moved here 5 years ago and are doing well. My oldest sister Mindy (class of '73) and middle sister Brenda (class of '75)
also live here.
My husband is a truck driver and works construction or hauls freight. Currently, he is working on the North Slope also know as Prudhoe Bay. Usually he builds ice roads in the winter there and hauls drinking water the rest of the year. I have driven truck and tour bus for summer jobs, and my do either one part-time once I retire.
My husband and I celebrated our 25th Wedding
Anniversary in '06 with a cruise around the
Hawaiian Islands. It was awesome and hooked me on cruises. Ruthann (Fitzgerald) Haider was living there at the time, so we were able to spend time with her and her family before and after our cruise!
I would love to hear from my old
friends!
