Dawn's Story

Life After life at Southeast, I went to the University of South Florida. The week I graduated from USF, I moved to North Carolina to be closer to my family. Life is quite busy. I am now the President of the Central Carolina Songwriter's Association and am trying to follow my dreams---the biggest problem there is that I just have too many and can't figure out which one to pursue first! =>) My job has changed again. Now I'm working at Preservation North Carolina, a non-profit organization that saves endangered historic properties in North Carolina from being demolished. My original role with the organization was the Executive Operations Assistant but now I'm doing that and the properties assistant role. So, it's busy but interesting work. Plus, my boss is supportive of the "arts" I'm trying to get into so there's some flexbility there. Over the years, I've learned that I should "never say never" as I, inevitably, end up doing whatever it is that I said I would "never" do. i.e. I never wanted to work with computers (where can you go now-a-days that doesn't???) but, luckily, I've acquired the knowledge in the main software programs and now wouldn't feel right working somewhere that didn't have computers. Plus, I've had to learn some of the more information technology role of computers with this role which has been very interesting to say the least. Oh, well. You live and you learn. I've been in my house now for almost three years---is time going by faster or is it just me?? I love it because I can actually garden! You are definitely limited on what you can do at an apartment or townhouse. I hate to admit it but I am turning into my mom (she's always loved gardening and birdwatching and now I'm right there with her). Hey, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! =>) I would have to say that my life is really quite good. I've got a great family, awesome friends, and I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. I miss those friends from school that I haven't been able to keep in touch with but I am flourishing in my new location. I'd love to hear from you and see how life is treating you now. School Ah...high school...some remember the good times, some remember the bad, and some don't remember a damn thing. I guess I'd be a bit of all of the above. I can't say high school was the high point of my life. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't awesome either. Every day was all about: "Oh, he is so cute!!", "Do I look alright?", "I cannot believe she just said/did that!", "I hate him/her!", "Homework?!?", "Crap! I'm gonna miss the bus!!"....Expand for more
I'm sure all of us experienced a vast array of emotional changes each day. Thank God for summer vacation and spring break!! But I certainly did learn alot! For instance, never admit you have a crush on a guy because it inevitably will get back to him and then you will feel like a complete idiot if he doesn't like you or want to have anything to do with you. Hmm...I think I'm still learning that one...oh well. =>) Oh, and always make sure that when you put your backpack on, it hasn't gotten your dress caught in the shoulder strap because you don't want to moon half the school. Yeah, that was, by far, one of the most embarrassing incidents of my life. High school...a place where you experienced humiliation at least once a month but had a blast with your friends every day. Oh, yeah, and you went to class and learned stuff. Hehehe! =>) College College: the "party 'til you puke and procrastinate until the day before papers are due" years. Yes, I was a late bloomer when it came to partying (although, technically speaking, you aren't legally able to drink until you're 21 anyway). Male strippers, night cruises, and partying every weekend. Those were definitely the most interesting years of my life. And it was the first time living without the parental units. We enjoyed almost every minute of it. I didn't declare a major until the beginning of my junior year and then I still wasn't sure that was what I wanted or that it would help me at all in life. Don't get me wrong, it was extremely enlightening but it's applicability to the corporate world was questionable. So, there I was, cramming for mid-terms and finals (more like opening the book for the second time) and writing papers (of course, there would be at least 3 due right before each exam period). I managed to get fairly decent grades to maintain my scholarship. I was working full-time all four years, first at Claire's as the Assistant Manager and then as a delivery driver at Pizza Hut (not many people expected to see a female delivering their pizzas to them---that always caused a pause when they answered the door). Life was extremely stressful and led me down a path I'll never forget. Needless to say, I got the hell out of there the second I graduated. But I did meet some great people that I have failed miserably at keeping in touch with. Life gets so busy you just don't seem to find the time to write or call and then everyone moves and finding their number again is hard as anything. Overall, college was fun, difficult, annoying, exciting, boring, and challenging.
