Dawn's Story
Life
Spent my early childhood on a little farm near Heyworth/Shirley Illinois. In 6th grade my parents divorced and we moved to Normal IL. My dad moved to NC and I followed a few years later. Because of my dad's work, we moved a lot. Between 1983 and 1988 we spent time in Havelock, Washington, Long Beach, Hillsborough and Durham. Moving around was what I knew and after high school I kept the pattern going...went to UNC-G to study interior design, and figured out pretty darn quick it wasn't my calling. Spent the summer and fall at Durham Tech catching up on core college courses, and transferred to UNC-CH to study English and Religion. In 1991 I graduated, and in 1992 married my high school sweetheart, Charles. We celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary in September. (yeah, I can't believe it either!) We have two beautiful daughters.
In college I had planned to be a teacher, but instead I took a retail management job at the store where I had worked throughout college. Through that job was fortunate enough to hire a girl who introduced me to her mother, ...Expand for more
an HR manager who gave me a break and hired me to work as her HR assistant. I worked my way up in HR at Sprint Cellular/360 Communications/Alltel until they laid me off. Worked in a few "HR consulting" jobs until Charles and I relocated to Wilmington, where I found another HR job at DAK. Stayed there for 4 years and recently began working in HR for the New Hanover County School System.
Those of you who know me now know me as a wife and mother, a coworker or church member. I'm still the same person, just stronger, happier and much more settled. After my year at UNC-G I realized I needed to rid my life of negative influences, take charge of my own destiny and choose a path for myself or I would never be able to achieve my goals. I am excited to see what is next and look forward to watching my children grow up and have families of their own.
I have no regrets about my past, I only wish I had been less wrapped up in my own completely messed up teenage life and been able show more kindness to people during the "bad years."
