Dean's Story
Life
After 21 years in academia (Professor of Geology at U. of Southern Mississippi), I left the search for funding to a position as a Program Officer for a science research funding agency (the Petroleum Research Fund, managed by the American Chemical Society) in Washington, DC. I've been living in DC-Area Virginia since August 2004, and my son Michael has been living with me since Hurricane Katrina - so much for my 'home office/spare bedroom.'
School
My favorite SVHS teachers were Mrs. Myrtle Greening in English, and Wayne Hollins and Ronald D. Miller of the Science departments. Had some memorable times with the Prometheans and Varsity Club, but those memories are getting pretty faded by now.
College
USC Trustee scholarship supported two B.S. degrees (1976 Biological Sciences; 1977 Geology). Went to Tallahassee for one year in the Geology M.S. program at Florida State, then tr...Expand for more
ansferred to University of Rhode Island. Finished my Ph.D. in Geological Oceanography in December 1982. Worked as a seagoing Staff Scientist for the Deep Sea Drilling Project at Scripps Institution of Oceanography between my Ph.D. completion and my first "hard-money" teaching job at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Workplace
Assistant Director of the Office of Research Grants, American Chemical Society, Washington, DC; also Program Officer for Geoscience research funded by the ACS Petroleum Research Fund. Formerly professor of Geology, University of Southern Mississippi, but 21 years of searching for research funding made it easy to move. Previously, I had summer research positions for the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, at Stennis Space Center, on the MS/LA coast, and for a data center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also at Stennis Space Center.
